    (Game 2)

Atlanta has won five of its last seven games and the Braves are in prime position to distance themselves from the rest of the National League East in this current homestand. Washington has been going downhill since the All-Star break and there looks to be no end in sight especially on offense as the bats have sputtered for most of the second half and its .251 average is the worst in all of baseball.

The Nationals have dropped eight of the last 10 starts by Livan Hernandez and it has been a mixture of bad pitching and bad hitting. He is having a horrible August with an ERA of 7.48 to go along with a 2.02 WHIP. Opposing batters are hitting .370 off him this month and .328 in his nine starts since the All-Star break. He has started against the Braves nine times since 2003 and he is 0-6 with a 7.29 ERA over 50.6 innings.

John Thomson has had a rough time of it since coming back off the DL. He has had three starts and none have been quality but he was idle for three months and it takes time to come back into normal form. His fourth start could be the one where he gets right again as it comes against an offense that scored a total of 14 runs in its last homestand over six games. The Nationals are averaging 4.1 rpg on the road, 27th in all of baseball. The Braves are hitting .289 at home this season which is the second best average in the National League and 4th in baseball overall. Game 2 is the best spot the Braves can be in as they are 30-12 on the season in the series’ second game this season. Atlanta has averaged 4.1 rpg over its last 10 games and 5.8 rpg in its last 12 home games. The Braves are averaging 5.3 rpg at home this season and exceed that number on Tuesday over a struggling Hernandez.
