2 Units New York Mets
Game: New York Mets at Colorado Rockies 9:05 p.m. ET
Sport: MLB - Major League Baseball
Line: New York Mets (Glavine) -130
Prediction: New York Mets (Glavine) -130
Explanation: 2 Units Free Pick
Arms Must Start: New York - Tom Glavine / Colorado - Jose Acevedo
New York has won six of seven games, which is its best seven-game stretch since May 1st through May 7th when the Mets also won six of seven. Ironically enough, the next game then was on the road with Tom Glavine taking the hill and losing a tough one to Chris Capuano who was red-hot at the time. The opposing pitcher this time around is nowhere near that quality.
Glavine has been pitching very well since a slow start to the season. He has registered quality starts in nine of his last 10 games including four of five on the road. The Mets lost his first six starts on the road but have rebounded to win his last two against the Yankees and Nationals. Overall, New York has won four of his last five outings. Coors Field has not been a place that intimidates Glavine as he is 3-1 with a solid 3.34 ERA in 10 career starts and he has allowed no more than three earned runs in his last six starts against the Rockies.
Jose Acevedo makes his first start of the 2005 season and he was awful last season with the Reds to put it kindly. He had a 5.94 ERA last year and he allowed four or more earned runs in 15 of his 27 starts. He has been decent as a relief pitching this season for the Rockies but we doubt he is ready to get back into the starting rotation. He hasn’t thrown more than 36 pitches in any game this year and the only reason he is starting is because of an injury to Jason Jennings.
Acevedo has allowed at least one hit in all eight of his relief appearances with the exception of a one-third inning outing so the effects of Coors have been felt even though his ERA is good. After 15 pitches, he is done as his ERA is 8.00 after that. The Mets have won seven of their last 11 games on the road and the majority of those were against much stronger competition. The Rockies are better at home but take away sweeps against the Reds and royals, two of the worst road teams in baseball and they are just 8-13 their last 21 home games. Play New York Mets
Predicted Final: New York Mets 7 Colorado Rockies 5
