Toronto Raptors at Boston Celtics 7:35 PM ET

    Over 202 Toronto/Boston –110 (2 Units)

Points have been all over the place in Toronto games recently as the defense has been a sieve. They have allowed 100 or more points in 8 of their last 11 games, averaging 104.2 ppg during this span in all games. Overall, the Raptors are 29th in the NBA, allowing 100.7 ppg and 27th in shooting, allowing 45.8% from the floor. The offense has been trying to keep up, scoring over the century mark 6 times in the last 11 but the Celtics up tempo style of play should help push them over tonight. Boston has given up 100 or more in 5 of their last 6 games, an average of 103.5 ppg. The biggest thing that sticks out is that the combined shooting percentage in Toronto games over the last 5 is a whopping 47.4%. Toronto and Boston rank 7th and 8th in the league respectively in points scored. The Celtics have been on fire from the field in the early going this season. After 14 games the Celtics are shooting a blistering 45.7%t from the field, ranking them 6th in the NBA. Toronto in only 2-5 over in games with a total of 200 or more but those two overs occurred in two of their last three games. Boston is getting more comfortable with the running style head coach Doc Rivers has installed as witnessed by the Celtics outscoring the Bucks on the fast break, 22-2 in their last game. Prior to that, the Celtics enjoyed their best offensive performance of the season against Orlando. Ricky Davis has given the Celtics second unit a big boost since moving to the bench November 21st. Since his move to the second unit, the bench is averaging 30.2 points per game, compared to just 23.0 points from the bench in the first seven games. Toronto has been scoring more points this season because they are taking much better care of the ball. Through the first 13 games of the season, the Raptors rank second in the NBA in lowest turnover average (13.3), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.53), and fifth in steal-turnover ratio (0.58).

    Thursday’s recap:

Miami Redhawks vs. Toledo Rockets 7:30 PM ET

    Toledo Rockets +1 –110 (2 Units)

We will continue to ride the Rockets who are undervalued yet again. What puts them in a really nice spot here is the experience that they have in these huge games. This is a veteran team that has already won two straight must win games to get here over Northern Illinois and Bowling Green. Their game prior to that was a loss at Miami but their lone conference can be attributed to 4 turnovers, as they outgained the Redhawks 380-371. The Miami defense has been solid his season but they are not the same on the road. With the exception of their game at Buffalo, who is one of the worst teams in 1-A, the defense has allowed 33.8 ppg. That can hurt against the Rockets who have scored 31 or more points in 7 of their last 9 games, averaging 39.1 ppg during that span. Toledo is in the title game for the third time in the last four years.

Averaging a whopping 477.5 yards per game, including 311.4 yards through the air, Toledo ranks second in the MAC and seventh nationally in total offense. Bruce Gradkowski through eleven games has completed 256 of 363 pass attempts (70.5 percent) for 3,224 yards with 23 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His efficiency rating is 162.18. He had one of his worst games of the year in the first matchup, but he's normally the league's best big game quarterbacks. Miami held Toledo's passing game to just 203 yards and a touchdown, but the Rockets became the only MAC team to rush for more than 160 yards against the RedHawks. The Toledo offense, which was dominant in the win over Northern Illinois that kept the Rockets alive in the West race, and then exploded for five straight second-half touchdowns in the comeback win over Bowling Green, is looking for redemption from that first loss. "We get an opportunity to play them again, in a championship game, at a neutral site, and I think that's awesome," Toledo senior wide receiver Lance Moore said. "We went down there and we didn't play well the first time, and we lost to them. To get another opportunity to play them - it just seems right.” Linebacker Anthony Jordan said the residue from the loss to Miami is still fresh enough to have an impact on the preparation for Round 2 with the RedHawks. The 4 turnovers in the game against the Redhawks was the only game in their last 7 where they committed more than one turnover. The question that must be answered is if it was an aberration or can we expect it to happen again. It looks to be the former since Miami is only 67th in the country in takeaways as they have gotten more than 3 only twice this season. The defense has not caused a turnover in their last two games and it seems that the only way Toledo loses is if they turn the ball over. Even with the advantages that Miami got, they didn’t do much with them. The RedHawks were far from perfect on offense. “We dominated field position and turnovers in the first quarter when we last played, but we were only up 6-0,” Miami head coach Terry Hoeppner said. “We have to be efficient on offense but also opportunistic.” The RedHawks have already committed 27 turnovers this season, which is higher than the teams' complete season total in any of the past three seasons. The RedHawks, who had not lost more than eight fumbles since 2000, have put the ball on the ground 27 times this season and lost 14 fumbles. The Rockets must get early pressure on Miami QB Josh Betts and has to protect its secondary. Miami is looking to defend their MAC Championship from last season but the big difference is that this game is being played on a neutral field. Toledo regains the MAC tonight.

Fordham Rams at Iona Gaels 7:30 PM ET

    Iona Gaels –13 –110 (2 Units)

Fordham returns only four scholarship players from last year’s squad, including three starters. Back are senior captains Derrick Breland and Mushon Ya’akosi along with fellow returning starter junior guard Jermaine Anderson. Also back is sophomore forward Dominic Osei. The Rams lost seven players from last year’s team and to make up for it, Fordham has five walk-ons who were on the roster in 2003-04. The Rams are allowing 53.6% shooting from the floor and 41.9% shooting from behind the arc. Their only win came against St. Francis (NY) but if not for a 19 rebound advantage and 38.9% free throw shooting from the Terriers, they might still be winless. They followed this effort up with a 15-point loss to Boston University. Not Boston College, Boston University. They then lost by 16 at home to NYC rival Manhattan. All in all, this is not a good team as they are extremely young and very inexperienced. Iona is coming off a loss to an America East team as well and that was Vermont. The Catamounts however were the same team that took Kansas down to the wire two weeks ago. Vermont shot 46.7% from the field which was the first Gael opponent to connect on better than 40.0% of its shots. The Gaels other loss came at a tough Creighton team by just 6 points. Big win over Northern Arizona and St. Bonaventure show that they know how to beat up on the patsies and Fordham sure falls into that category. Unlike the Rams, Iona is pretty experienced and they will have by far the two best players on the court in Greg Jenkins and Ricky Soliver, who were both named to the preseason All-MAAC Second team. The two are averaging 29.5 ppg and 10.8 rpg. Jenkins is ranked 16th nationally, and first in the MAAC, in field goal percentage at 71.4% from the floor. Overall, Iona’s post players have connected on a high rate of success from the floor - 49-for-79 (62.0%). Through four games so far in 2004-05, Iona is averaging almost 50.0% shooting from the floor (49.3%, 101-205) and almost 40.0% from three-point land (38.5%, 20-52). Those numbers are nearly identical to what Fordham is allowing on the season. In addition to its offensive proficiency, Iona’s defense has been strong, holding opponents to just 36.8% shooting from the field (86-234). Since the 1995-96 season, Iona is 10-9 vs. A-10 opponents, a good indication showing they can play up to the competition. Even though Fordham isn’t considered to be on that same level.
