    MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

    OPINION SELECTIONS (1% of Bankroll)

GREEN BAY -6½ over St. Louis

St. Louis vs. GREEN BAY OVER 51

Two NFC teams fighting for division leads and post-season possibilities meet up Monday night at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, as the Packers host the St. Louis Rams. The home team has won five straight games following a 1-4 start, including their 16-13 come-from-behind game in Houston last Sunday, while the visitors were 37-17 losers at Buffalo last Sunday and have lost three of its last four since a 4-2 start.

Rams’ QB Marc Bulger and his cast of fellow offensive stars will bring their fifth-ranked passing offense to take on a Packers defense that was able to limit what David Carr and the Texans could do through the air, allowing the young signal caller only 164 yards last week. Green Bay ranks just 23rd in the league against the pass so they will have their hands full with the St. Louis offense. The Rams' running game can completely disappear at times, as it did last week in Buffalo. They don’t figure to have too much success here, as the Pack hasn't allowed a back to rush for 100+ yards since Tennessee's Chris Brown ran wild for 148 on 27 carries in Week 5. Overall the Pack ranks 12th in the NFL against the run, and last week they limited Houston's Domanick Davis to 65 yards on 21 carries.

Green Bay may not have a healthy Ahman Green available for this game, and the other backs are banged up as well; however, whoever is healthy enough to carry the load will be doing so behind a solid offensive line that should be able to open holes against a vulnerable Rams run defense that ranks 29th in the NFL. St. Louis has let a back to pass the century mark in its last three games. Of course if the Packers need to throw the football a little more they have one of the best in the biz to lean on. Brett Favre completed 33- of-50 passes for a season-high 383 yards last week and leads the 3rd-ranked passing game in the NFL. Favre will face a Rams pass defense that is 19th in the NFL. Last week, Buffalo's Drew Bledsoe, coming off perhaps the worst performance of his career, completed 15-of-24 passes for 185 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

Even if Green cannot go, expect the Packers to get enough run production to allow Favre to do his thing. The temperature is expected to be below freezing at kickoff, and the Rams are simply a much weaker team outside of their climate controlled track, especially late in the season. The Packers are much more built for this type of atmosphere and should ultimately prevail. Favre is 36-1 SU at home when the temperature at kickoff is 34 degrees or below.

The Rams should have Green Bay’s full attention and focus here. First, the Packers are looking to erase the memory of their last Monday contest, when they were shredded at home by Tennessee. They also have a score to settle with St. Louis. The problems with the Rams go back to Jan. 20, 2002, when Favre threw those half-dozen interceptions in a 28-point playoff loss. In October 2003, Favre broke his right thumb in a loss at St. Louis. Few teams have had Favre's number like the Rams, who capitalized on 12 Packers turnovers to outscore Green Bay 79-41 in those two meetings. So the Packers have been looking forward to this night ever since the schedule came out. This is similar to a situation that existed in 1990s, when the Packers lost seven straight to the Dallas Cowboys, three times in the playoffs and all at Texas Stadium. They finally got the Cowboys at home in 1997 and routed them 45-17 on their way to a second straight Super Bowl appearance. The Packers are looking for a similar turnaround here against St. Louis.

We have SIX PRO INFO SPORTS POWER SYSTEMS active here which all indicate a play on the Packers with a combined 94-0-2 ATS record. In looking at one system that goes back to 1984, Monday non-division road teams (not an underdog of 14+ points or favorite of more than 8 points) off a non-shutout road SU loss last week and not before a bye have struggled against opponent off scoring at least 8 points and not a shutout SU win in its last game. These visitors are a disastrous 0-18-1 ATS since the mid-‘80s. Green Bay’s come-from-behind victory last week qualifies them for a newly discovered system, as Monday teams (not a road underdog of 9+ points or a home underdog) off a SU win of less than 12 points trailing after 3 quarters last week have done quite well against opponents off a road contest and not a SU win of 8+ points in their last game. These teams have been perfect in beating the spread 14 straight times since 1990. Ironically, it was St. Louis in a similar situation this season recording the system’s most recent win, as they were returning home off their comeback win at Seattle. The Rams hosted Tampa Bay in Week 6 and won 28-21 as a 6-point favorite to cover the spread by 1 point. Green Bay themselves have done well off such a win, as they are 8-1 ATS the week after a win in which they did not have the lead after any of the first three quarters. The Rams are 1-5 ATS when facing such teams.

St. Louis will bring their best to this contest, but it’s not likely to be enough. We can’t give the game a higher rating due to the Packers’ injuries and the likelihood that the Rams will play with determination off their embarrassing loss last week in Buffalo. Ultimately, we do like Green Bay to take advantage of the inevitable St. Louis mistakes to get the SU & ATS win, while St. Louis does their part in scoring enough points to push the game OVER the total.
