Cal-Poly Mustangs at Portland Pilots 10:00 PM ET
Portland Pilots –13.5 (2 Units)
The Mustangs are without the services of two returnees from last season’s squad for the first four games. Kameron Gray and Joe Henry are expected to return for the Dec. 12 home game against Santa Clara. Gray is an All-Big West preseason first team guard and is their leading returning scorer at 13.1 ppg. Three of the nine players with the most minutes are freshman and only senior Nick Enzweiler, who started all 27 games last season, is their only returning starter. Vladimir Lisinac is the only player scoring in double figures for the Mustangs. There are some big names to replace and so far, no one has stepped up. The inside has taken a big hit with the departure of Varnie Dennis (18.3 ppg, 7.9 rpg) and Shane Schilling (16.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg). Cal-Poly is shooting only 34.2% from the floor through their first 2 games and it won’t get easier against the stingy Portland defense. The Pilots opened their season with a tough loss to Northwestern but they have rebounded nicely with three consecutive wins, including victories against Western Michigan and Georgia Southern. This is a very veteran team with 6 juniors and seniors leading the way. Eugene Jeter and Donald Wilson form a very solid backcourt even though Wilson has yet to show what he can do. He averaged 12.8 ppg last season and is at only 5.5 ppg this year but he is making up for it other areas. Portland head coach Michael Holton has stressed that defense will be the bridge to the Pilots' hopes of ending a string of six losing seasons, and that has been the case so far as they have held each opponent to 64 points or less (58.5 ppg). Last season Cal Poly posted 3-10 record in road games and they are off to a 0-1 start this year.
