    Colorado +3 over NEBRASKA

Two Cornhuskers' streaks will be on the line on Friday as Nebraska hosts Colorado. Nebraska has made 35 straight bowl trips and has not had a losing season in 42 years. The Buffaloes come into this game well rested off a bye and feeling extremely confident after their thrilling 38-31 win against Kansas State on November 13th. The victory ensured that Colorado would be bowl eligible this season and keeps their hopes alive for a Big 12 North Division title alive.

Quarterback Joel Klatt and running back Bobby Purify have picked up their play in recent games to power the Buffs’ surge, while the defense has stiffened against the run. Colorado may be weak against the pass this season, but that won't mean much if QB Joe Dailey can't get this Nebraska passing offense out of its current rut. The Huskers were supposed to be implementing a version of the West Coast offense with Bill Callahan at the helm that would revitalize this offense, but instead it has been one of the worst in the Big 12 this season.

This is a must win for Nebraska, while Colorado is already bowl eligible so many will back the Huskers here. We will take the contrarian route and side with the underdog visitors due to several factors. First of all, the Buffaloes are simply the better team, as our Power Ratings based purely upon statistics indicate they should win this game by double digits. While this is not an absolute “must win” game for Colorado, they will still have plenty of incentive. Besides fighting for a division title, they will certainly have revenge on their minds here. Last year, it was a visiting Cornhusker team that beat Colorado to keep them home for the holidays. The Buffs have not forgotten that sour taste and are quite eager to return the favor, especially QB Klatt. Late in the game last year he threw a pass that was intercepted in the end zone and ended Colorado’s drive and bowl hopes. "We didn't go to a bowl game last year, and we're reminded of that every day," Klatt said. "We know what it's like to sit home, and they put us there last year. We'd like to do that to them. That's returning the favor a little bit."

As for teams in Nebraska’s predicament, we consider why a team stands to be eliminated, and determine if its fundamental character has changed. Changes in coaching and key player personnel are 2 red flags that are both present here with the Huskers. A new coach, new assistants, and a new offensive system that was a drastic change from the previous decades have completely changed the fundamental character of this team. Ultimately, the most important consideration is whether or not the team sincerely believes they belong in a bowl game or the playoffs. Not how badly they want it, but if truly believe in themselves. Nebraska has done little to inspire confidence this season and we see no reason for that to change here. Rather than helping, the pressure of this situation is likely to work against them.

The once proud and might Cornhuskers have been reduced to “bragging” about how “good” they played in a 30-3 loss at Oklahoma last time out. It wasn’t too long ago at Nebraska that no defeat would ever be regarded as a “moral victory”. Now we find them at 1-6 ATS vs. .500%+ opponents off 2+ SU & ATS wins and 0-4 ATS in their home finales. Meanwhile, Colorado has covered their last 4 in Lincoln, are 10-1 ATS overall in their road finales, and a strong 18-5 SU & ATS in the season’s final 4 games under Gary Barnett. We expect another big finish here by the Buffaloes as they take advantage of Nebraska miscues and score enough points on offense to record the mild upset SU & ATS win.
