Purdue Boilermakers at Miami Ohio Redhawks 8:15 PM ET

    Miami Ohio Redhawks –2 -110 (2 Units)

The mid-major conference is favored over a major and for very good reason although it hardly seems like enough. Miami returns 10 letterwinners, including four starters, and has a balance and depth at all positions that it has not enjoyed in recent years. Their defense will be superb once again and their offense looks to be more consistent after going through hot and cold stretches last season. Miami returns 79.9 percent of its rebounding and 64.4 percent of its scoring from a year ago, mostly in the form of Chet Mason and Danny Horace, who averaged 7.9 and 5.8 rebounds per game and 10.3 and 9.9 points per game, respectively. With five returners and two newcomers, Miami's interior have the size, depth and experience they have not had the last couple of years. According to head coach Charlie Coles, one of the main differences this year is at center with Monty St. Clair. "Good shooters look for shots, and if you don't have good shooters, you cringe when you have to shoot,” said Coles. “That's the difference this year." This is the last season for head coach Gene Keady and it isn’t expected to be a good one. The frontcourt is where the team is likely to struggle most, as junior forward Matt Kiefer retains his starting spot after averaging just 6.5 ppg last year. They will struggle down low against the veteran Redhawks. Purdue is hurting in the backcourt as returning starter David Teague will remain out as he nurses a broken hand. In the exhibition season, Purdue won by using an up tempo offense but the Miami defense will put an end to that. The Boilermakers won their preseason games by only 9 and 16 points against inferior competition while committing a combined 41 turnovers in the two games.

    Thursday’s recap:

North Texas Mean Green at Arkansas St. Indians 7:00 PM ET

    Under 54.5 North Texas/Arkansas St. –110 (2 Units)

This total seems to be about 10 points off according to our numbers. Neither team has an explosive offense, with Arkansas St. ranked 64th, averaging 370 ypg and North Texas ranked 79th, averaging 351.4 ypg. The defenses are more porous but in Sun Belt games, both teams have been sufficient. The Indians are allowing 25.5 ppg in their six conference games while North Texas is scoring 24.3 ppg in their Sun Belt games. The offense has been much better but they may be without their leader, running back Jamario Thomas who is questionable because of an injured left hamstring. "We've got to go in and establish the run, somehow, some way, regardless of who our running back is, for the rest of the things to work [Thursday]," North Texas head coach Darrell Dickey said.

The defenses of North Texas and Arkansas St. are 8th and 9th in the 9-team Sun Belt but schedules have a lot to do with that. Between them, they have faced 7 teams from the Big XII, SEC and CUSA. Only 44 total yards separate 2nd place and 9th place in the conference defensive rankings, a very insignificant amount making the rankings very misleading. For North Texas, the Sun Belt Conference title is secure, and a New Orleans Bowl berth has been accepted. But Dickey doesn't expect the Mean Green to rest on its accomplishments. He said the team's conference winning streak, which stands at 24 consecutive games, will give players a healthy dose of motivation. Motivation usually plays a bigger role on the defensive side of the ball, as they will look to contain the Indians offense that has scored just 29 points in their two Sun Belt home games. Nose guard Michael Pruitt was the Mean Green's defensive player of the game against Idaho with six tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss. More important, he helped fill the void when Evan Cardwell left with an injury. "We have been very lucky that people have stepped in and stepped their play up to provide us what we need to get the job done," Dickey said. Against Utah St., Arkansas State had 242 yards offense at the half and finished with 313. The Indians managed just 71 yards offense the final two quarters of play as the game took on the look of an old-fashioned slugfest. The Arkansas St. defense is hoping Thomas doesn’t go but they have been solid at home on defense, giving up just 16 points in conference play. Stopping the running game will be the task at hand and without Thomas, North Texas is very thin. Sophomore Kevin Moore has served as Thomas' backup since the conference opener against Middle Tennessee State, but is also slowed by injury. Fullback James Mitchell carried the load after Thomas departed against the Vandals, and sophomore Ricardo Smith could figure into the backfield mix. The Mean Green will most likely be looking at a long field all night. The Indians are 10th in punt return yards allowed (5.08) and are 7th in kickoff return yards allowed (16.80) in the country. Arkansas State punter Jarod Little is ranked 34th in the nation with 42.08 yards a kick and the punt team is 9th is with a net average of 39.76.

St. Mary’s Gaels vs. Memphis Tigers 7:00 PM ET

    Memphis Tigers -9.5 –110 (2 Units)

While it might come as a surprise that St. Mary’s defeated Cal to get here, it really wasn’t. Cal is missing their best player and has been picked to finish last in the Pac 10 in some places. The Bears still played good enough to win but the Gaels won the game at the foul line. With the Bears committing early fouls, St. Mary's got to the charity stripe 26 times and made 22. "We knocked down free throws down the stretch," St. Mary's forward Jonathan Sanders said. "That is what kept it from being close." The Gaels will continue to play without 3 potential starters. All-West Coast Conference guard Paul Marigney will miss the team's first seven games of the year while resolving academic issues. Marigney, who shot an impressive 41.6 percent from behind the arc last season, led the Gaels with an average of 16.0 ppg. Senior forward Frederic Adjiwanou, who led the team in rebounding is out as is transfer Erik Bond, projected to be one of the team's best shooters. The Gaels beat Belmont and Cal despite going 4-for-34 on 3-pointers. In two games, Memphis has been successful in forcing teams into bad shooting nights. Head coach John Calipari probably will continue harping on his team about defense, but in the first two games, the Tigers have held opponents to 25 and 28 percent shooting. Against George Mason, the Memphis offensive weapons along with their rebounding power created a couple of bad stretches for the Patriots. Ideally, they would like to have kept the game in the 50s, but with Memphis holding a 50-35 advantage on the boards, George Mason couldn't slow down the Tigers. Sean Banks and Rodney Carney gives the Tigers one of the best frontcourts in the country. Through the first two games, the duo is averaging 24 ppg and 14 rpg. However, the big surprise could be the emergence of freshman Richard Dorsey who is averaging 14 rpg in just over 20 minutes per game. Another freshman, Darius Washington Jr. has done a good job in taking over at the point guard position. As good as St/ Mary’s is expected to be this season, they are without their best backcourt player and simply cannot compete with the athleticism of the Tigers.
