Iowa St. Cyclones at Oklahoma St. Cowboys 2:00 PM ET

    Iowa St. Cyclones +17 -110 (2 Units)

The Cyclones have had two weeks to prepare for the rushing attack of Oklahoma St. and as of right now, they are one of the surprises with a 2-1 record. Their defense has been the key as they are ranked 17th in the country, allowing just 268.7 ypg. The strength has been the rushing defense where they are giving up only 79.3 ypg and 1.9 ypc, good for 11th in the nation. The Cowboys have no secrets are they are all about the run, running the ball 181 times and throwing just 31 times in their 3 games.

ISU last year was the Big 12's worst, finishing 0-8 in conference play. Saturday's game is the Cyclones' first opportunity to wash that bad taste out of their mouth. The Cyclones are improved and have done good things so far. They've already matched last season's win total which is huge in itself after another dismal rebuilding year was predicted by many. Stopping the run will obviously be the number one objective and the Cowboys don’t look to have too much else to come out with a balanced attack. The offense has been conservative with redshirt freshman quarterback Donovan Woods, who is more a threat running the ball than passing it. The jury is still out on whether or not Woods can win a game with his arm. Freshman quarterback Bobby Reid is back at practice meaning a controversy has already heated up. Cowboys’ coach Les Miles talked openly about Reid competing for the quarterback spot. He didn’t downplay it. He didn’t try to deny everything. It’s possible they are messing with a very good thing. Quarterbacks can be a fragile lot, and it has nothing to do with their physical prowess. At the quarterback position, the difference between serviceable and superstar usually comes down to what happens between their ears. Miles said the Cyclones 2004 defense is better than the one in 2001 that physically manhandled the Cowboys. “That’s how I see them, and they’re potentially the best defense we’ve faced (in 2004),” Miles said. Numbers through the first three games indicate that while the Cowboys' offense has been virtually unstoppable, the Oklahoma St. defense hasn't exactly been a brick wall.

In 12 games last year, Dan McCarney's offense produced just eight scoring plays of more than 20 yards. The Cyclones have four long-range touchdowns already in their first three games this season. A new weapon has emerged for the Cyclones and that is the passing game. Todd Blythe already has as many touchdowns as any Iowa State receiver did last season. And McCarney said Monday he wasn't about to alter his strategy. Starting quarterback Bret Meyer has thrown two touchdowns to Blythe. Backup Austin Flynn has found him three times. Oklahoma State comes into Saturday's game ranked second-to-last in the Big 12 Conference in total defense (340.3 yards per game), next-to-last in rushing defense (151.3) and fifth in scoring defense (16.0 points per game). The defense has had only one stiff challenge among its first three games. UCLA, currently ranked 10th in the nation in total offense, totaled 443 yards in a season-opening 31-20 loss to the Cowboys. Oklahoma State's other two opponents, Tulsa and SMU, currently rank 94th and 99th, respectively, in total offense. McCarney said center Luke Vander Sanden (hamstring) will play this week. Vander Sanden was in for just 14 plays in a Sept. 11 loss at Iowa and missed the Cyclones' victory two weeks ago over Northern Illinois. He will help the running game immensely. Iowa St. was decimated by injuries to key players last season. Only a handful of players have missed time this season, a big reason for the team's success.
