    Wednesday’s OPINION SELECTION

MARSHALL -6½ over Miami, OH (PASS if line moves to -7½)

The “Big MACs” will meet Wednesday night, as Marshall hosts Miami of Ohio in another grudge match. Marshall's defense has kept the Thundering Herd in games against major BCS powers, including close losses to Ohio State and Georgia, but their record reads 0-3. The RedHawks are at 2-2 on the season, having beaten 2 easy foes and stumbling badly at Michigan and Cincinnati.

Since the Mid-American Conference divided in 1997, only Marshall or Miami has won the East division. Last year the RedHawks finally got over the hump against Marshall in a big way, crushing the Herd 45-6. Without a division title, Marshall was missing from postseason play for first time since 1990, having competed in Division I-AA playoffs and then 7 straight bowl appearances since.

Marshall coach Bobby Pruett is hoping to have 30,000 Herd fans all dressed in green in the stands for the game to help his team end the first ever 3-game losing streak under his watch. The school is also dishing out 10,000 free sets of Cheerstix – those plastic noisemakers also called thunder sticks - in hopes of making life difficult for the RedHawks offense and their junior quarterback Josh Betts. Pruett has tried to downplay the revenge factor, at least publicly but we’re not buying it.

This is a classic case of revenge playing a determining factor in a game. Revenge is often overused by some handicappers. It is only applicable in rare situations. If a college team lost just 1 or 2 games the previous year, then revenge is on their minds when they face a team they lost to, especially if the loss cost the team a division or conference title, and/or a bowl game. Revenge can also be a factor if a team suffered an embarrassing loss in the previous meeting or if its opponent did something to rub it in. At the same time there can easily be overconfidence by the team that won a previous blow out. We have many of those factors at work here. The loss at Miami cost Marshall the league title and a bowl berth. It wasn’t just a simple loss, but a huge blowout, the Herd’s worst defeat in over 3 seasons. Of course there was much celebrating by the RedHawks to finally get past Marshall after losses in the previous 4 seasons. Miami’s coach Hoeppner even made a comment after the game that Marshall was outcoached. The frustration of last year’s ugly loss on national TV and this year’s close calls should be vented by Marshall on the field here, against a Miami team that has been a disaster on the road this season. With a chance for redemption and revenge on national TV, boosted by a sea of 30,000+ green-clad fans making life difficult for the RedHawks, we look for the Herd to stampede here for a SU win of at least a TD to also get the cover.

FINAL SCORE: MARSHALL 33 MIAMI, OH 25
