3* Houston
While the Cougars definately lack talent in their front seven on "D", they are a high scoring offensive team that usually is able to take care of business to beat the mediocre-caliber teams, which Rice is. The Cougars are one of only 6 teams in the nation last year to average 200+ yards both rushing and pasing, and they racked up 34.5 ppg to boot. Houston is in a spot here where they excel, going 18-9 ATS out of conference and 3-0 ATS as away favs (not a familiar role!). Houston destroyed Rice in last years season opener 48-14 and we expect them to take this game doing many of the same things they did last year, mainly control the clock with long drives that keep Rice's offense off the field most of the day. Rice is 1-8-1 ATS the last 10 years in home openers and 2-8 ATS at home out of conferece and we look for a similar result to last year's blowout.
2* Purdue/Syracuse Over
Joe Tiller has the kind of veteran QB and WRs that he loves and should be able to return to his high-flying offensive style of the past this season behind Kyle Orton. The defense, which has been one of the country's best the past 2 seasons, returns only 3 starters, and they take on a Orange team that always is able to mount a potent rushing attack. The 'Cuse stop unit was often overmatched last year as they averaged under 2 sacks per game, and they return only 1 starter on the DL. No pass rush vs. a Tiller offense makes for a long afternoon.
