    Thursday’s 7STAR SELECTION

    UTAH -8 over Texas A&M

The Texas A&M Aggies take on the 20th-ranked Utah Utes in Salt Lake City on Thursday night to kick off the 2004 campaign. Aggie head coach, Dennis Franchione's first season in College Station was not a pretty one, with the Aggies winning just four games and only two of their eight matchups in Big 12 play. The tail end of the schedule was extremely troubling for the Aggies, as they lost their last three contests by a combined score of 168-37. In the case of the Utes, the '03 season was one of their most memorable in school history. Utah finished an unexpected 10-2 overall and with a record of 6-1 in Mountain West Conference play, the Utes captured the MWC Championship. Coach Urban Meyer was named the league's Coach of the Year, the National Coach of the Year by the Sporting News. Utah earned a trip to a bowl game for the first time since 2001, defeating Southern Mississippi in the Liberty Bowl.

Texas A&M's success running the ball last season was one of the few things the team did right. The Aggies rushed for an average of better than 177 ypg and scored 22 touchdowns on the ground. Courtney Lewis led the way, gaining just over 1,000 yards while reaching the end zone 12 times. Quarterback Reggie McNeal was also effective running the ball for A&M in '03,

registering 370 yards and four scores; however, he was not at all impressive as a passer, throwing for just 1,782 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He completed just over half of his pass attempts and never appeared to be comfortable in the pocket. The play of A&M's defense last season was especially disappointing, as the unit ranked 40th in the nation against the pass and a dismal 112th against the run. The “Wrecking Crew” was simply a wreck.

The Utah offense will once again be centered around the play of star quarterback Alex Smith. In '03, Smith was one of the most pleasant surprises of the season for Utah, passing for 15 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He also completed better than 65 percent of his pass attempts for 2,247 yards. A dual threat under center, Smith also rushed for 452 yards and five scores. Smith should have another impressive season for the Utes, as he has the comfort of four returning starters on the offensive line. RB Brandon Warfield is gone, but they have some talent returning in the backfield, including Marty Johnson who was supposed to be the starter last year. He got into trouble in an off-field incident and was suspended, giving Warfield an opportunity. Johnson won’t start this game, but look for him early. The receiving corps is outstanding for Utah and worth mentioning, led by the talkative senior Paris Warren. There may not be any household names on defense, but all they have done is shut out their opponents in their last 10 quarters, including complete-game goose-eggs of BYU, which hadn’t been shutout since 1971, and Southern Mississippi in the bowl game.

Texas A&M is a squad that should improve in its second season under coach Fran, but this matchup against Utah is too big of a mountain to climb to open the season. QB McNeal had off-season shoulder surgery and did not participate in spring drills. He may not be at the top of his game here as a result. On the other side, Smith is one of the top quarterbacks in the nation and should give the Aggies fits on defense. Meyer is too good of a head coach to allow his team to come out flat, and this team really is as good as advertised. Just about all of the key players return and the return of RB Marty Johnson is huge. The Utes have a fast defense that should keep A&M’s Lewis and McNeal from making plays when they go wide, while the 300+ pound tackles will stuff everything inside.

Instead of bringing confidence and a positive attitude into this game, Aggie coach Franchione has been complaining about his team’s non-conference schedule. He only arrived at A&M last season and games with Utah and Clemson were already solidified, but complaining about these prior commitments does not exactly exhibit the kind of pride and backbone that made the Texas A&M program great. After going 4-8 in Franchione's first season, the A&M tradition is certainly in jeopardy, especially with a youthful lineup poised for playing time again this season.

There are some very strong numbers that are active in this game. A&M is 0-7 SU & ATS in their last 7 road underdog roles, 1-17 ATS when allowing 28+ points, and 0-14 ATS in SU losses. On the road, they are a frightening 1-37 ATS in SU losses. Meanwhile, the Utes are 5-1 ATS vs. current Big 12 schools, 12-1 vs. all non-conference opponents, and coach Meyer is 10-1 ATS vs. non-conference foes, including 5-0 ATS at home. At home in nationally televised night games was an atmosphere that Utah thrived in last year, as they beat 2 bowl-bound Pac-10 teams, we look for them to beat the Aggies here by 2 TDs.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: UTAH 31 TEXAS A&M 17

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: UTAH 41 TEXAS A&M 21
