    Saturday’s 7STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)

    Virginia Tech +18 over USC

The 2004 NCAA Football season kicks off Saturday night at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland as Virginia Tech takes on Co-National Champion and preseason #1 USC in the BCA Classic. Last year, Frank Beamer's squad got off to a fast start once again, as the team won six straight games and looked like a national title contender. Unfortunately for Hokie fans, Tech finished with an 8-5 record, including a 52-49 shootout loss to California in the Insight Bowl. This season will be the first for the Hokies as members of the ACC, as they made an off-season exit from the Big East. For the Trojans last year, head coach Pete Carroll guided his team to a 12-1 finish and a Pac-10 title. USC won its last nine games of the campaign, including an impressive 28-14 win against a very good Michigan squad in the Rose Bowl, and the only thing holding Carroll's team back from a perfect season and the undisputed 2003 National Championship was a triple-overtime setback at Cal. After sharing the crown with LSU, the Trojans are one of the clear favorites to win the 2004 title with a wealth of talent returning on both sides of the ball. This game marks the first-ever meeting between Virginia Tech and USC on the gridiron, and it should be a much closer game than advertised.

Virginia Tech averaged an impressive 35 points per game last year on just over 400 yards of total offense per outing. A major reason for that was the production of Kevin Jones, one of the nation's top tailbacks. Jones has moved on to the NFL and will certainly be missed. Junior Cedric Humes takes over the rushing duties, and should have an outstanding season, although he’s not quite the talent that Jones is. Humes averaged a nifty 5.8 ypc a year ago and scored five touchdowns on just 65 carries. He was injured in the spring, but is healthy and excited to prove what he can do. The quarterback controversy that was supposed to take shape this season between Bryan Randall and Marcus Vick has become a moot point, now that Vick has been suspended for the season following off-the-field problems. Although Randall was handed the job without a fight, there is a good chance he would be starting this game even if Vick were available. Randall completed over 60 percent of his passes last season for nearly 2,000 yards and 15 TDs. He also rushed for over 400 yards, so he is a double threat. The offensive line returns three of five starters and will certainly be tested by Southern Cal’s defense.

The Trojan “D” was dominant against the run in 2003, holding opponents to just 60 ypg which was tops in the nation. The squad did surrender 276 ypg through the air, which was 110th in the country, although many of those yards came when teams were far behind trying to catch up. The defense is once again built around an imposing front line and a group of superb linebackers.

Two years ago Carson Palmer threw for nearly 4,000 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior at USC and won the Heisman Trophy before being taken first overall in the ensuing NFL Draft. Matt Leinart had plenty to prove as Palmer's replacement last year, and he far exceeded everyone's expectations by throwing for over 3,500 yards and 38 scores. His top target from a year ago, standout receiver Mike Williams, attempted to make the jump to the NFL this past offseason but after a court decision blocked his path, he was left without a team. Williams petitioned the NCAA to have his eligibility reinstated, but it was denied just an hour before the team was scheduled to leave for Maryland. The running back position has a lot of talent led by Reggie Bush and LenDale White. The offensive line is the big question mark for USC, as they return just one starter. They have the talent to be one of the best units in the nation, but it won’t happen overnight.

The Tech defense has earned the reputation of being one of the nation's top units over the past few years. The squad surrendered 23 ppg and over 367 yards per game a year ago, falling far short of expectations. The unit does return six starters from last year and that should give the team a bit of consistency.

The Hokies have lost all six of its previous meetings with the nation's top-ranked team, and that record will more than likely be 0-7 SU after this matchup; however, VaTech coach Beamer will have his Hokies ready to play and we expect them to give the Trojans quite a tussle due to a number of factors. While a number of key players, including Leinart, return for USC, several off-the-field situations deprived them of some of its core personnel. Awaiting word on whether Williams would be reinstated turned out to be a huge distraction, especially with the NCAA not informing the team of its decision until 60 minutes before they departed for this game. All-American defensive end Kenechi Udeze passed up his senior season to enter the NFL draft, and wide receiver Whitney Lewis and tailback Chauncey Washington, who were expected to add depth, aren't eligible because of academics. Tight end Gregg Guenther is concentrating on basketball and backup Dominique Byrd is out with a leg injury. Winston Justice, a two-year starter at offensive tackle, won't play because he was suspended from school for two quarters for allegedly pulling a pellet gun last February on a fellow student. "You began to wonder what was going to happen next," Leinart said. Most recently, police confirmed that at least one USC player, Hershel Dennis, is under investigation for sexual assault. Dennis, expected to be another star in the crowded backfield, has been suspended indefinitely.

Don’t expect the Hokies to come out tight and flat, especially in DC, where they will enjoy a decided home-field edge. At least three-quarters of the 90,000+ in attendance will be cheering the underdogs on. Tech is not capable of shutting USC completely down, but with varied nickel and dime coverage/blitz packages, they should be able to disrupt Leinart’s timing. The key will be how well USC’s offensive line can keep Leinart from throwing off of his wallet. The Trojans USC will discover — perhaps it is already catching the drift — that winning a national title is one thing, defending it quite another.

Beamer’s boys have always been fast starters, as demonstrated by Virginia Tech’s 29-2 SU record in games played before November 1st. Of course his team is absolutely pumped for this game and will give SC their “A” game. QB Randall pretty much sums up the team’s attitude: "Playing a No. 1 team on national television … that's like a national championship game," he says. "That kind of opportunity doesn't come along very often." Beamer added, "I think we're probably as ready as we can be."

USC may well end up playing for the National Championship in January, but this team won’t simply pick up right where they left off last season. In each of Carroll’s years here, his teams have really hit their stride by the time the conference schedule comes along, and that will likely be the case this season, especially with such an inexperienced O-line. The Trojans were 1-3 ATS to start 2001, 2-4 ATS to start 2002, and 2-2 ATS in 2003 before dominating every team in sight. That creates a nice dichotomy strongly favoring the Hokies, as they are tremendously fast starters, 24-9 ATS in the first 5 games of the season since 1996. They have been a double-digit underdog only twice in the past 9 seasons, and covered the spread both times in close losses to Miami, FL in 2001 and 2002. The Hokies should be able to keep this one as well, coming up short of pulling off a SU shocker, but well within covering the hefty pointspread.

    Thursday’s FREE 4STAR SELECTION

    ARIZONA STATE – 24 over Texas El-Paso

Arizona State and Texas-El Paso kick off their seasons in Tempe on Thursday night. The UTEP Miners were one of the worst teams in the Western Athletic Conference last season, as they finished with a 2-11 mark. The only victories were over SMU and I-AA foe Sam Houston State. With the lackluster effort the Miners decided it was time for a change at head coach, dropping Gary Nord in favor of Mike Price. As for the Sun Devils, they too had trouble in their own conference, winning just two of eight PAC 10 outings. Overall, they finished just 5-7 last year after placing third in the league in '02 to the surprise of many.

Sophomore signal-caller Jordan Palmer, brother of former Heisman Trophy winner, Carson Palmer, who will be the starting QB for the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals this year, got the nod from coach price as UTEP’s starter. Last season Carson's little brother started five games, appearing in 10 overall, completing just under 50 percent of his attempts for 1,168 yards, seven touchdowns and was picked off 13 times. Look for Palmer to be handing the ball off to senior tailback Howard Jackson for quite a few carries. As a First Team All-WAC selection last year, Jackson was one of the only bright spots for the squad, racing for 1,146 yards on the ground. Add to that his 391 receiving yards and another 609 yards on kick returns and Howard was first in the conference and fourth nationally in all-purpose yards per game with just over 165. The problem for UTEP and their offense, however, is the holes they have to fill on the offensive line. After losing three starters from last season to graduation, they lost two more potential starters to knee injuries during spring practices. It will certainly take time for this group to gel. The UTEP defense ranked 104th out of 117 Division I-A programs last year. The unit returns nine starters this season, including the top tackler from 2003 in Robert Rodriguez, so improvement is expected.

Most QBs would be more than happy to post the numbers that ASU’s Andrew Walter put up last season, but they were not as impressive, nor was the team’s record as impressive, as was expected. Walter has added 15 pounds to his frame this year and is ready to make a resurgence as one of the top gunslingers in the country. He has also been named one of the candidates for the ****** Unitas Golden Arm Award and should have a terrific season. With another year in head coach Dirk Koetter's offense under his belt, Walter should excel by showing off one of the quickest releases and throwing arms in the nation. Sophomore Loren Wade returns at tailback for the Sun Devils after leading the way last year with 773 yards and five touchdowns. Wade should show vast improvement this season behind an offensive line returning three starters and comes into the year as one of the top units in the Pac-10 because of their experience and impressive size at nearly every position. ASU returns just one starter to its defensive front, but it’s DE Jimmy Verdon. He is the star of the defense and could possibly move inside to help a unit that is making the transition from a 4-2-5 scheme to a traditional 4-3 set.

Coming off their disappointing season, Arizona State had a renewed sense of purpose, more leadership and a quarterback who rejected a big paycheck to play his senior year of college football. Andrew Walter turned down a chance to go pro after NFL draft experts said he could go as high as the second round last April. The Sun Devils will not feel the pressure of high expectations this year since the annual Pac-10 media poll has them finishing sixth. Very often teams that under-achieve big expectations will over-achieve low expectations the following season, especially if the core players return for a chance at redemption. That is the case here, and we expect Arizona State to be very fired up to start this season. The Sun Devils are an outstanding 18-2 ATS in SU wins, while UTEP has some ugly numbers to contend with. The Miners have covered the spread in their season-opening game only once in the past 8 years, are 2-10 ATS against non-conference foes, 4-12 ATS on grass, and just 1-20 ATS when scoring 14 points or less, while ASU is 7-0 ATS when holding opponents to 14 points or less. No doubt, Mike Price has the Miner program headed in a positive direction, but it will take awhile. In the meantime, the team can be expected to struggle as they try to grasp new offensive and defensive schemes from an entire new coaching staff. Meanwhile, the Sun Devils are ready to explode right now and should do just that as they unload on UTEP.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: ARIZONA STATE 45 UTEP 13
