7 STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)

NY JETS –2½ over NY Giants

A battle for the Big Apple will be played out in East Rutherford, NJ Friday night, as the Giants meet the Jets. The Giants, who will technically be the visiting team Friday night, are coming off a 27-20 loss at Carolina in their last game, while the Jets scored their initial preseason victory of the year when they soared past the Colts at Indianapolis, 31-7, this past Saturday.

Giants quarterbacks Eli Manning and Kurt Warner each had decent showings against the Panthers, with Manning completing 9 of 15 passes for 117 yards in his first preseason start and Warner going 9 for 11 for 71 yards and an interception. Warner will open the game this week, and both Warner and Eli Manning will play with the first-team offense. Third-string QB Jesse Palmer has not worked out this week due to injury, which means little-used Ryan Van Dyke will mop up.

Jets quarterback Chad Pennington will go into this game trying to avoid flashbacks of last year's preseason tilt with the G-men. Pennington sustained a broken wrist in that contest, an injury that forced him to miss the first six games of the regular season and crash-landed the Jets' plans. Quincy Carter, who the Jets signed as a backup on Tuesday, will not see action against the Giants. Ricky Ray and Brooks Bollinger should both play this week behind Pennington.

For the Giants players, “Camp Coughlin” has been an often harrowing experience in organization and assimilation. They've been forced to accept a new way of doing business at a frantic pace, and some aren’t too happy about it. "There have been a lot of things I'd rather not get into," said wide receiver Ike Hilliard. "Let's just put it this way. Everyone has their different styles. I'll leave it at that. But if I had to put my finger on something for you, I'd say last year's camp [under Jim Fassel] was more linemen friendly, more front-seven friendly. The skill guys always get our running in. But the interior guys have been doing a lot more banging." There has been subtle grumbling from players that their time was not their own, almost ever. Wives, sons, daughters and friends might visit but there would be precious little time to interact. "It's pretty much what I expected," left tackle Luke Petitgout said. "It's been a grind every day, non-stop, no nights off, no little breaks here or there that [Jim] Fassel would throw us."

Meanwhile, the Jets are flying high off their win at Indy and are looking to continue the positive vibes. They have done very well in this preseason series with the Giants. Last year, they failed to beat the spread, but amazingly enough won the game SU after losing Pennington. We have some tremendous numbers here that indicate the Jets should provide us with another strong performance, as they are a blistering 18-2 ATS vs. opponents with a preseason winning percentage of more than .333%, and 11-1 ATS in Week 3. Coach Edwards is 5-0 ATS off a SU win, and the Jets are also a solid 16-5 ATS against NFC East opponents and 14-8 ATS when playing with less than 7 days rest. As for the Giants, we note in a league-wide preseason system that road underdogs off allowing 650+ total yards in their last 2 games are a horrible 3-14 ATS. The Giants are also a horrific 1-13 ATS against AFC East division opponents, 4-23 ATS when they are above .333% and 2-10 ATS in Week 3.

Don’t look for either Warner or Manning to light up the Jets defense. Instead, look for the Jets to have much success running and passing the ball against the Giants “D” that has been shredded thus far in exhibition play, and to come away with a comfortable SU & ATS win.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: NY JETS 17 NY GIANTS 10
