    NEW YORK at CAROLINA

For the G-men, number one draft pick Eli Manning gets his first pro start under center. Coach Tom Coughlin has indicated that Manning will play at least halfway through the second quarter and could play the entire first half.

Manning will be followed by Kurt Warner, who started in last weekend’s win over Kansas City. Warner will play into the third and will be followed by Jesse Palmer.

One offensive line starter will be out tonight as guard Barry Stokes has a strained buttock. Tight end Jeremy Shockey also will sit out with a foot injury.

The team announced Thursday that Keith Washington, who was expected to start at right defensive end, will be out three to four weeks after suffering a fractured orbit bone in his left eye. In addition, New York’s three starting linebackers, Carlos Emmons, Nick Greisen and Barrett Green, are all out with injuries this evening.

Completing New York’s injury woes, placekicker Bill Gramatica is out with back spasms so free agent Todd France will handle the kicking duties.

Carolina coach John Fox has said that his starters will play roughly the first half, although the precise playing time would be controlled by the number of snaps played. Jake Delhomme will start at quarterback.

Fox has been tight-lipped and vague throughout training camp when answering questions about player rotations and injuries. Quarterbacks Chris Weinke and Rodney Peete will both play tonight, but Fox would not say who would follow Delhomme under center.

Fox also said that three injured players, wide receiver Walter Young and defensive tackles Kris Jenkins and Colin Branch, would be game-time decisions.

    GAME TRENDS

Carolina is 3-0 SU and ATS versus New York in the preseason since 1995.

New York is 1-5 ATS on the road during exhibition play the last three years.

Since the 1995 preseason, Carolina is 9-1 ATS against conference opponents, including a win and cover versus Washington last weekend.

Carolina has gone over the total in three of its last four preseason home outings.
