7 STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)

    NEW ENGLAND -3 over Philadelphia

The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots make their 2004 debut at home on Friday night, as the Philadelphia Eagles pay a visit. Gillette Stadium faithful will get their first chance to see running back Corey Dillon in live action, after the Patriots acquired the former Bengal Pro Bowler via trade in the offseason. Philadelphia will get its first glimpse of wideout Terrell Owens in a game situation, after the Pro Bowl wideout arrived from San Francisco via free agency in the offseason. Dillon figures to see limited play, along with quarterback Tom Brady and the rest of the first-team. Backing up Brady are Rohan Davey and Kliff Kingsbury, who should see a bulk of the snaps. Philly QB Donovan McNabb will likely play sparingly in his initial preseason action, yielding to backups Jeff Blake and Andy Hall.

While defending Super Bowl and conference champions are rarely teams to play on in the preseason, the Patriots are the exception to the rule, as is this situation - the NFL champs opening preseason at home. Most teams play vanilla defenses during the preseason, but some will resort to blitzing, and that usually gives a team an advantage. Teams who blitz a lot during preseason often do well because their opponents aren’t ready for it with backup linemen. It’s almost an unwritten rule among the NFL coaching fraternity not to blitz much during preseason, but New England’s Bill Belichick is unconventional. He is famous for his confusing defenses, and he starts the confusion in the preseason, which is a big reason the Patriots have been so strong in exhibition play. Against a quality opponent with several offensive stars like the Eagles, Belichick is likely to be up for a challenge as is his team. They certainly won’t want to let Donovan McNabb and loud-mouth Terrell Owens work on their timing on the Patriots home field. We’ll even go out on a limb and predict McNabb throws an interception trying to force the ball into “T.O.” The Eagles offensive line a bit thin as well, as Jon Runyan left practice with a concussion Sunday and did not return, while Jamaal Jackson, Alonzo Ephraim, and Jermane Mayberry are not 100%.

Andy Reid’s defense is banged up, too. Jevon Kearse had a minor ankle injury Tuesday. Safety Brian Dawkins, who injured his knee last week, will go through the entire camp without a full practice. Defensive end Jerome McDougle has not had one practice, and defensive tackle Darwin Walker did not make it through a full practice. This will obviously work in the Patriots favor as they should look fairly crisp on offense. It's hard to imagine Tom Brady looking any better than he has so far at training camp. He's thrown the ball with zip and accuracy in the short passing game and hit dozens of receivers in stride with the long ball. He has not thrown one interception in camp, and there have been absolutely no signs of his offseason shoulder surgery. We look for Brady to get the team into the endzone before giving way to Davey. Rohan has the kind of arm that excites coaches and puts visions of defense-stretching, vertical patterns in their heads. Now in his third season, Davey is making strides to become the Patriots No. 2 signal-caller. Reports out of training camp indicate he has been taking most of the snaps behind Brady and he is off a tremendous season in NFL Europe. Belechik wants to give him a good, long look in this game so he should get a chance to perform and put some points on the board as well.

We always consider team depth and unit rotations and see another edge here for New England. Belichick said he wants to use Friday night's game ``to reassess veteran players,'' while Philadelphia coach Andy Reid wants to focus on rookies. We’ll take Belichick’s vets, even back-ups, over Reid’s rookies every time. The Philly QB is not quite as strong as it has been in previous seasons. A.J. Feeley is now in Miami and Koy Detmer will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and miss two weeks. That leaves a rotation of McNabb in the 1st Q, Jeff Blake in the 2nd Q, and unproven rookie Andy Hall in the second half. Again, we’ll take our chances with the Patriots back-ups against Hall. Advantage – New England as they will not be putting any rooks behind center here.

Again, playing on the NFL champs is usually something to avoid in the preseason; however, the numbers here pointing us in the other direction are simply too numerous to ignore. Despite being a poor play overall, Super Bowl winners are 5-0 ATS at home in Week 1. We also have some very strong trend preseason dichotomies at work here. New England is 15-4 ATS vs. the NFC East while the Eagles are 5-11 ATS vs. the AFC East. Overall in non-conference play the Pats are 26-13 ATS, including 6-1 in their last 7, while Philly is 12-20 ATS. In games played on a grass field, New England is 24-15 ATS, including 6-1 ATS over the last 7, while the Eagles are 3-9 ATS. In games where the line is +3 to -3, the Patriots are 3-0 ATS over the past 3 seasons, while Philadelphia is just 4-12 ATS in their last 16 tries. They are also just 3-10-1 ATS in their first preseason game. Finally, over the past 3 seasons in Friday games, the Eagles are 0-3 ATS, while New England is 2-0 ATS.

Look for the Patriots to earn a comfortable win in front of their faithful fans, as the Eagles simply aren’t ready for a game with so much energy and intensity this early.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: NEW ENGLAND 24 PHILADELPHIA 6

    SATURDAY'S FREE OPINION SELECTION

    Carolina vs. Washington UNDER 35

The NFC Champion Carolina Panthers take to the field for the first time since Super Bowl XXXVIII on Saturday night, as they visit the Washington Redskins. Carolina was the surprise team of the NFL a season ago, making a Super Bowl appearance just two years after finishing 1-15. Jon Fox's club will take on a Redskins team fresh off a 20-17 victory over Denver in the Hall of Fame Game this past Monday and a PRO INFO SPORTS winning OPINION SELECTION. The contest marked the return of head coach Joe Gibbs, who had been off the sidelines for 11 years.

Both teams have solid QB rotations. Jake Delhomme is expected to play sparingly in the Panthers' first preseason tuneup, and will be succeeded by Rodney Peete and Chris Weinke as they are vying for the No. 2 quarterback job. Fox will want to get a long look at an offensive line that will feature four new starters.

The Redskins figure to be a bit ahead of Carolina in terms of development after opening the season with Denver earlier in the week, but they didn’t look particularly sharp in the victory. QBs Mark Brunell hit only 4 of 8 passes for 18 yards against Denver, while Patrick Ramsey went 3 of 8 for a paltry 12 yards. In Canton on Monday, Washington's offense looked like they were still getting acquainted. They were clearly out of synch and if it weren't for third-string quarterback Tim Hasselbeck completing 70 percent of his throws, the passing game would have been much worse than 14-26 for 148 yards. They also managed only 72 yards on the ground and fumbled three times.

We don’t expect the ‘Skins to fare much better against the Panthers’ stout defense. Gibbs sounds like he'll run another bland. "You're trying to use good common sense in preseason," Gibbs said. "You're trying to do enough so you can evaluate your players. Obviously you don't want to do anything to jeopardize your regular season." We also don’t expect the Carolina offense to do much in their first outing against an aggressive Washington defense, especially working behind an offensive line that’s a work in progress.

The biggest factor in this game, however, to hold the scoring down may well be the weather. The forecast is calling for rain and heavy winds. Such conditions will make it very difficult for either offense to do much of anything. In the last 3 preseasons, Carolina has been a road underdog of 3 ½+ points and saw the final score fall UNDER the total each time, while we note that Saturday home teams off a SU win in their last game have seen the final fall UNDER the total in 15 of 22 games, including the only 2 times it came up last year. This figures to be a close, low-scoring game coming in UNDER the total as well, with the losing team probably held to single digits.
