4/15/04 – Today’s Free Play from Prime Sports Picks

TORONTO BLUE JAYS (Halladay) –178 @ DETROIT TIGERS (Johnson) +168:
    MLB – AL 1:05PM (EST)

These two teams are meeting for the sixth time already this season with Detroit holding a 4-1 edge going into Thursday’s game. The Tigers will once again have to face the reigning AL Cy Young winner Roy Halladay who they scorched for 7 runs (6 earned) on Opening Day in Toronto. While Detroit appears to have improved it offense, averaging over 6 runs per game, their starter for today, Jason Johnson should get them into trouble. Johnson lasted only 2.3 innings in his last start surrendering 6 earned runs and taking the loss at home against Minnesota. For his career he is only 2-8 against Toronto.

Today’s game will not be a repeat performance of Opening Day as Halladay, who also started slowly last season, will pull things together and comeback strong. Lifetime he is an impressive 9-2 against the Tigers. Toronto’s bats are starting to heat up too and they should come alive on Thursday against Johnson in Detroit.

While picking the Blue Jays to win here is certainly no surprise (as the price is on the high side) there is still significant value that should not be left on the table because a $100 play would still net about $56. We generally do not pick such high favorites, but the value here is too good to pass up. Look for the pitching to dictate in today’s matchup and take the Blue Jays on Thursday afternoon.

    Best of luck,
    -Drew
