No. 5 Syracuse Orangemen vs No. 4 Maryland Terps 5:40 pm EST

    Syracuse +2.5 (2 Units)

Syracuse was able to advance thanks to Gerry McNamara having a career game. He stepped up because Hakim Warrick was in foul trouble most of the day and was non-existent on the boards. We expect Warrick to show up here to give the Orangemen more balance than Thursday. Maryland struggled and we still think that their #4 seed is a bit much. The Terps had a couple of opportunities to put away UTEP, but couldn't. They got just enough from their starters and others in the regular rotation to win. "We haven't put teams away this year given the opportunity," Maryland coach Gary Williams said of his team that features four sophomores in the starting lineup. Maryland struggles from the field (44.2%) and from the free throw line (60.9%). Maryland has struggled with the zone all year. Syracuse's 2-3 should put a clamp on the penetration of Maryland point guard and leading scorer John Gilchrist. The Orangemen did a great job against BYU by switching to a man-to-man defense after the Cougars couldn’t miss from the outside. That alone got the Orangemen back into the game after falling behind by 11 points. Maryland isn’t the same threat as BYU so the zone should be just fine. Syracuse is allowing 57.2 ppg their last 5 games and 57.0 their last 7. The Terps are giving up 79.8 ppg their last 5 and 79.9 ppg their last 7. Maryland has come through with clutch free throw shooting despite coming into the post season with a bad percentage. That will catch up to them. Syracuse is better from the line and they have really picked it up, hitting 73.0% their last 5 games. Four of Maryland’s last 6 wins have been by 3 points or less while one of the other games went into overtime. Syracuse has now won 6 of their last 7 games including wins over Connecticut and Pittsburgh on the road. The Orangemen are 6-3 ATS on the road against winning teams and they are 4-1 ATS as a dog this year.
