UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal 8:30 pm EST
UCLA +15 (2 units)
Stanford seems to finally be getting some of the respect they deserve with their #2 ranking in the country. However, they may be getting a bit too much respect in this game. UCLA has quietly had a very solid first half of the season, going 9-4 against a much tougher schedule. They are 5-1 in the PAC 10 with their only loss coming last time out against Arizona. Prior to their loss to Arizona, they had lost their first 3 games by a combined 7 points to Kentucky, Santa Barbara and Michigan. UCLA is one of a very small amount of teams that can hang with the Cardinal down low. UCLA has outrebounded six of its last eight opponents and overall, the Bruins have been outrebounded just three times in 13 games. The Bruins are outrebounding their opponents by 4.1 boards per game in PAC 10 play. Forwards Trevor Ariza (6.8 per game) and T.J. Cummings (6.6) lead the way and tall guards Dijon Thompson (5.4) and Cedric Bozeman (4.7) get their share. With UCLA Coach Ben Howland disappointed by the recent performance of Michael Fey, Ryan Hollins will start at center for the first time this season. Instead of sending Fey, who is 7 feet and 257 pounds, against Stanford's 265-pound Rob Little, Howland will start Hollins, a slender but more athletic 7-footer. Fey has not done the job on the boards, going three straight games in conference play without a board. The strong defense has been evident as UCLA is allowing opponents to shoot just 41.2% from the floor. Only three opponents (Arizona, 54.4%; UCSB, 52.2%; Michigan, .46.3%) have shot higher than 43.5% and five have been held under 40.0%. UCLA has won three of the last four games in Maples (losing last season). Two of UCLA's recent wins at Stanford were when the Cardinal was ranked #1.
