7 STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)

    Green Bay +6 over PHILADELPHIA

Last year, the Green Bay Packers went into the playoffs with a variety of crucial injuries and it hurt them dearly in an ugly defeat to Atlanta in the Wild Card round. On Sunday, the Philadelphia Eagles will have similar hurdles to face when they host the healthy Packers for an NFC Divisional round battle at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia, which beat the Packers 17-14 at Lambeau Field in Week 10, will be missing two of its key players - leading rusher Brian Westbrook and outside linebacker Carlos Emmons. Westbrook was forced to have season-ending surgery on a torn triceps muscle, while Emmons broke his leg late in the 15th game. Losing Westbrook's 945 total offensive yards and 11 touchdowns - not to mention his return abilities - will be particularly tough for the Philadelphia offense to overcome. The Eagles, who are fresh off a bye week, backed their way into the top seed in the NFC postseason for the second straight season after getting help from the Detroit Lions in Week 17, who beat St. Louis. Green Bay is coming off their thrilling 33-27 overtime win over the Seattle Seahawks at Lambeau Field in the Wild Card round.

Emmons' presence would have been huge for the Philadelphia defense against Ahman Green and the Packers' excellent running game, which was tops in the NFC this season. Emmons is one of a myriad of injuries along the defensive side of the ball for the Eagles, who finished 22nd in the league against the run. Depth in the defensive line has been a major issue for the Eagles with DE Derrick Burgess, DT Hollis Thomas, rookie DE Jamaal Green and DT Paul Grasmanis on the shelf. Look for the Packers' talented offensive line to have success pushing the thin Philadelphia defensive line around in this contest. Green Bay opened plenty of holes for Ahman Green to run through in the first meeting, as he racked up 192 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries. It was only some costly turnovers on a wet night that allowed Philly the Eagles to escape with a 17-14 win. The Eagles have a major injury concern in the secondary, as Pro Bowl corner Troy Vincent is still hampered with a hip flexor. Vincent, who missed the season finale against Washington, will likely play but it remains to be seen how long he'll last. Green Bay's offense is similar to the Eagles in the fact that it doesn't have a standout receiver. but Brett Favre has the ability to spread the ball around to many different receivers, including WRs Donald Driver, Javon Walker and Robert Ferguson. Also, keep an eye on Packers TE Bubba Franks around the red zone. Keeping Favre off balance with blitzes will give Philadelphia its best chance to win this game. In the first meeting, Philly sacked Favre four times and caused six total fumbles. At the time, however, Favre was in the early stages of his thumb injury and couldn't grip the ball very well.

With Westbrook out of the lineup, a load of the running game will be shifted to veteran Duce Staley and fellow backup Correll Buckhalter. Replacing Westbrook as the third down back and kick returner will be BYU rookie Reno Mahe. The elusive Mahe touched the ball just once in the regular season, as he caught a ball for five yards in place of Westbrook versus Green Bay. Having a rookie in charge of the return game is a bit risky, and one muff could be huge in this game. Philadelphia was second to the Packers in yards per carry this season, while ranking fifth in rushing). They will be a bit limited in their running calls without Westbrook on the field. Green Bay hasn't been great against the run this season, but it held Shaun Alexander and Seattle to just 49 yards via 2.3 ypc on the ground last week. The Packers will obviously need a similar effort this week. A controlled pass rush will likely be the best option for Green Bay to keep Donovan McNabb in the pocket and force him to make throws. McNabb has a tendency to scramble out of the pocket and make plays with his feet when the Eagles need a big play. While Green Bay's pass rush hasn't been great this year as a whole, it did manage to sack Hasselbeck twice last week and force him into the crucial overtime interception.

The Packers match up quite well with the Eagles, and should be able to keep this one close with a chance to pull out a late SU win. With the Eagles biggest weakness stopping the run, coinciding with the Packers strength, Favre should be able to use play action quite effectively and make some big plays. So far in the 2004 NFL playoffs, only 2 of 6 home teams have covered the spread, and we've seen 3 games decided in either OT or in the last minute of regulation. We expect this one to be another nail-biter. Philly will likely prevail, but the Packers have been one of the hottest teams in the league since December rolled around, and have been playing with a great deal of motivation and emotion since the passing of Favre's father. Their season may come to an end here but they won't go quietly.

PROJECTED FINAL SCORE: PHILADELPHIA 24 GREEN BAY 23

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: PHILADELPHIA 20 GREEN BAY 17 (OT)
