The Oakland A's made the move to obtain the services of Jon Lester just for this type of
situation in the playoffs... winner takes it all. But, did the A's sacrifice their offense viability
to get the arm? That is one of the many questions that will be answered tonight as the A's
travel to Kansas City to take on the Royals in a game AL wildcard matchup.
Lester comes in to tonight with the postseason resume... he has become a postseason stalwart
and his numbers in October stack up well against some of the all-time greats. So, with that
all that said, and the fact that Lester has handled this lineup pretty damn well this season...
it should be expected that Lester has a solid outing.
KC fought tooth and nail down the stretch to reach the postseason. They had the division title
clearly in their sights, but were unable to hold off and then overtake the Tigers in the final
weeks of the season.
Royals have some offensive liabilities. The Royals have no one on their team with 20 HR's or
even 75 RBI's, but this team does lead the league in SB's and have the fewest K's. Team batting
average of .260 is good enough for 4th in the AL, but without the power to hit the 3-run shot
they must scrap and fight for every run they get.
Going to lean towards the Royals slightly in this spot at home... but with said, I expect this
to be a low scoring, highly dramatic, grinding type game that won't be decided until the late
innings and lots of tense moments are worked through.
I am playing this game UNDER the run total, as Lester should keep the Royals in check to the
extent they don't run and hide, and with the A's struggles with the bats, it makes sense that
Shields can keep his team competitive in this game as well.
Playing KC Shields -103 (3*)
Playing UNDER 6.5 -110 (5*)
GOOD LUCK
