This is the first time the KC Chiefs are in the play-offs since 1997. KC has the highest rated offense of this year playoff teams at #2, but combine that with the 29th ranked defense and you may see a problem. Against teams of playoff caliber their average score has been 27-23. It should be noted that home field has a particular advantage to the Chiefs in that they give up an average of 10 less points per game. Conversely the Colts average a combined score of 29-23 versus playoff opposition, but only 27-21 on the road.
Dick Vermeil has installed the same offense he had with the Super Bowl winning Rams, and has finished ranked in the top five each year. They are extremely potent in the RED ZONE and rank #1 among NFL squads. Unfortunately the KC defense is as porous as the offense is explosive ranking # 29 in the NFL.
Vermeil’s boys finished second in special team ranking, and a great deal of credit needs to go to Dante Hall. Indy’s combo of Q.B. Manning (4000 yds), RB James (1000 yds) ND W.R. Harrison (1000 yds) have done this three times in their careers. This can be said of no other team in the playoffs or the complete NFL.
Colts have an improved #10 ranked defense that shut down Denver last weekend. They are lead by Dwight Freeney (Pro Bowl), but their Achilles heel is allowing 100 plus yards in eleven of sixteen games. This is a clash that is tough to favor either of these squads.
