Seattle Seahawks at San Francisco 49ers 5:00 pm EST
Seattle E (2 Units)
The Seahawks must win Saturday to have a chance at the final NFC wild-card spot. Seattle also needs Minnesota or Green Bay to lose or tie. With them playing Saturday, they won’t know their fate until Sunday so there will be no laying down if Minnesota and Green Bay both win since those games are the next day. Niners cornerback Ahmed Plummer (back) likely will play but will not be 100 percent, but nickel back Jason Webster (chest) probably won't play. As a result, Niners coaches reluctantly must play Rashad Holman and Jimmy Williams more often. Seattle wide receiver Darrell Jackson sprained his ankle last week but is expected to play. With Jackson, Koren Robinson and Bobby Engram, the Seahawks have the depth at wide receiver to create a lot of mismatches. The only Seahawks player who is not expected to be available for Saturday is guard Jerry Wunsch (ankle sprain). The 49ers will be without star receiver Terrell Owens, who broke his left collarbone on Sunday. Safety Zack Bronson (neck) is doubtful; running back Garrison Hearst (knee), cornerback Ahmed Plummer (back), guard Ron Stone (knee) and defensive tackle Bryant Young (groin) are questionable. All are starters. Travel is an issue for the Niners who have a short week of preparation to begin with. Mechanical problems delayed their plane's arrival back in California until 6:30 a.m. Pacific time on Monday. The 49ers have won two of their past three games, averaging 39.7 points. They have scored 30 or more points in their last 3 games, which is a solid play against system. Seattle has lost 6 straight on the road but it’s not like they aren’t competitive. Losses to Cincinnati, Washington, Baltimore and St. Louis were by a total of 18 points. The Seahawks playoffs begin Saturday while San Francisco will try and play spoiler. The Seahawks have the weapons on offense to win this one if it does turn into a shootout.
Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers 4:15 pm EST
San Diego –4 (2 Units)
This is the first time the Chargers have been favored in more than a year so you know times are tough for the Raiders. It's hard to imagine the Raiders showing any more enthusiasm for Sunday's game. The Chargers meanwhile should play hard as it was announced that Marty Schottenheimer would return for the 2004 season. The Chargers have the motivational edge on their side. In Week 4 in Oakland, San Diego had a 31-17 lead with less than six minutes remaining but allowed two TD’s in a span of 3:14 and then lost 34-31 in overtime. San Diego is very young and it has showed, mostly on the defensive side of the ball. The Chargers have permitted 36 touchdown passes, eight more than any other NFL team and only four short of the Denver Broncos' 1963 record. The Bolts are allowing 236 passing yards a game, 28th in a league of 32 teams. Opposing quarterbacks own a composite 97.9 passing rating against them, which is not only a league high, but exceeds every individual NFL quarterback's rating with the exception of Steve McNair's and Peyton Manning's. The good news is that Rick Mirer is coming to town. Mirer is 16th in the AFC with a 66.1 rating. Oakland is averaging only 293.5 yards (23rd in the NFL) and 16.6 points per game, down from 389.8 and 28.1 last season. All year, the Raiders have been horrid against the run and decent against the pass, thanks in large part to the splendidly gifted cornerback duo of Charles Woodson and Phillip Buchanon. That was until Monday night, when Brett Favre lit up a secondary featuring three former first-round picks for 311 yards and four touchdown passes, all in the first half. The Raiders are ranked 28th (358.5 yards per game) in total defense. Injuries have whittled the tackle position to two healthy bodies (Rod Coleman and Chris Cooper), with run-stopper supreme John Parrella (also an IR casualty) the most damaging loss. Expect LaDainian Tomlinson to have a big day. The injuries keep piling up for Oakland. Coach Bill Callahan said Monday that Porter is doubtful for the Raiders' season finale Sunday at San Diego because of a strained right calf. A day after tackle Lincoln Kennedy announced plans to retire at the end of the season, Callahan said a torn left triceps muscle would keep the 11-year veteran out of Sunday's game.
