    GMAC Bowl, Mobile Alabama

7 STAR SELECTION (5% of Bankroll)

    Miami, Ohio -13 over Louisville

Two of the nation's top offenses battle in the 5th annual GMAC Bowl on Thursday as Ben Roethlisberger leads Miami-Ohio against the Louisville Cardinals from Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile. The RedHawks come into this bowl game ranked 14th overall in the nation, and the Mid-American Conference champions for the first time since 1986. They are one of the hottest teams in the country, having won 12 games in a row, including an impressive 49-27 victory over the bowl-bound Bowling Green Falcons in the MAC Championship game. This will be the school's first appearance in a bowl since losing to San Jose State by a score of 37-7 in the 1986 California Bowl. Louisville is making its school-record sixth straight bowl appearance and its second straight showing in the GMAC Bowl. The Cardinals are hoping that this season's version will go much better than last year's when it was pounded by Marshall and Byron Leftwich, 37-15, in Mobile. Louisville won its last two games of the season with the last victory a wild one, as they blew a 21-point lead but were able to rally for a 43-40 win against Cincinnati. Although Louisville has been able to advance to a bowl game in each of its past five seasons prior to this one, it recorded only one win in those contests, which came 2 years ago in the Liberty Bowl.

Miami’s Roethlisberger has been extraordinary this season. The MAC Offensive Player of the Year and a projected high NFL Draft selection after just his junior season, the talented quarterback has thrown for 4,110 yards, 33 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions this season. His outstanding play has ranked the RedHawks fourth in the nation in total offense with an average of 494 ypg and fifth overall in scoring offense, turning in 42.5 ppg. Roethlisberger has not accomplished all of these impressive offensive numbers by himself, as he has several weapons surrounding him. The most dangerous may be wideout Martin Nance, who finished as one of the top receivers in the MAC with 81 receptions for 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns. The RedHawks have a nifty 1-2 combo at running back either, with Cal Murray and Mike Smith who combined for over 1600 yards along with 27 TDs. While Miami-Ohio's offense gets all the accolades and notoriety, its defense has been one of the most stingy and consistent units in the nation this season. The RedHawks are ranked 26th in the nation in total defense, allowing only 330 ypg and are 19th in scoring defense with an average of just 18.8 ppg allowed. The play of the defensive front seven has really been the strength of this unit, as they are allowing just 102 ypg on the ground and have given up only 11 rushing touchdowns in 13 games played this year.

The Louisville Cardinals' have some gaudy offensive numbers of their own, with more of a collective effort in mind. Despite the lack of a true superstar, it has been able to rank itself sixth in the nation in total offense with an average of 489 ypg. Tailback Eric Shelton is one of the difference makers, as he leading the team with 756 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. Shelton missed the last three games for Louisville this season, but will be available for this game. Lionel Gates has teamed up with Shelton to form a potent rushing tandems of their own. The play of Louisville's southpaw quarterback, Stefan LeFors, can’t be overlooked, either. LeFors threw for only 15 touchdowns this season, but completed 61 percent of his passes, was picked off only seven times and averaged 243 ypg through the air. J.R. Russell has been LeFors' main target all season long and finished with 68 receptions for 1,069 yards and five scores. Russell is clearly the most potent receiving threat, as the next closest player in terms of receptions it tight end Ronnie Ghent. While Louisville's offense was one of the most prolific in the nation this season, its defense has been one of the worst. The Cardinals are allowing opponents to gain 415 ypg, 87th in the nation. This unit was clearly worn down by the end of the season and it was never more evident than in the Cardinals' last four games of the year when they gave up an average of 38 ppg.

While these two offenses are somewhat close in terms of statistics and overall success this season, the defenses will be the deciding factor. Miami has one. Louisville does not. Roethlisberger should have little trouble getting into a rhythm and picking apart the Louisville defense, and sending the Cardinals back home with their fifth bowl defeat in the last six years. While the RedHawks QB play has been rock solid and consistent this season, Louisville’s LeFors is a gunslinger and is subject to periods of erratic play. Eric Shelton will be in the game; however, this will be his first game action since a painful neck injury, and he will likely not be up to full speed. Lionel Gates, his replacement, is no slouch either; however, it won’t matter much who is in at running back for the Cardinals if Miami builds up a big lead. The pressure will obviously be on the Louisville defense to stop the Miami attack, and they will only be able to hang on for a quarter or two. Speaking of pressure, putting the heat on Roethlisberger is the only way to knock him off his game, but the Cardinals offensive line is as solid as any BCS conference team, and Louisville lacks a potent pass rush.

These teams played one common opponent, Cincinnati. Miami played the C-USA team at home in a revenge game for the BearCats and held on to win, 42-37, after wasting a bid lead. Louisville ended the regular season with a 43-40 victory at Cincinnati. Louisville blew a 21-lead against the Bearcats and needed a 54-yard touchdown pass with only 70 seconds left to pull out the victory. Not much of an edge there for the RedHawks; however, Miami has fared quite well against other bowl teams. After a season-opening loss at Iowa, where nobody other than the Hawkeyes ever win the RedHawks beat bowl-bound Northwestern by 30 on the road, Colorado State by 20 on the road, and Bowling Green twice, winning by 23 at home and 22 on the road in their last game, the MAC Championship. Louisville, meanwhile, lost 2 of 3 to bowl-bound teams, and allowed 45 points in their lone win, falling 31-28 at TCU, losing 37-7 at home against Memphis, before beating Houston at home, 66-45. The Cards are a horrific 88th in the nation in overall 'D' and couldn't hold any of their last four opponents to fewer than 31 points.

While some might point to recent bowl experience for Louisville, we’d point out that this is the first bowl start for LeFlors and the first post-season game for UofL HC Bob Petrino. The timing of the game also appears to have been tough for their fans. The school has sold little more than 1,000 tickets to the game, a far cry from the more than 20,000 it took to its New Year's Eve Liberty Bowl appearances several years ago.

Not only is the GMAC Bowl a non-holiday weeknight game during finals and in conflict with winter commencement ceremonies, but it also comes at a time when schools at all levels in the Louisville area still are in session. Additionally, the flu bug continues to hit the Cards, with running back Michael Bush the latest victim. He struggled through practice this week with pains in his chest and throat. Safety Brent Johnson, meanwhile, fought a stomach ailment and threw up once on the field. Our information indicates that 16-20 players have experienced symptoms. Even some coaches are ill.

In looking at some numbers, Louisville is 1-5 SU & ATS in its last six bowl contests, including 0-4 SU/ATS vs. opponents off a SU win. Miami is 11-3 ATS off back-to-back SU wins vs. an opponent off a SU/ATS win, 15-5 ATS away on grass fields, 12-4 ATS as a road favorite, and 5-1 ATS as a favorite of 10.5 to 21 points. The MAC has been the best bet in bowl games among the conferences, going 6-1 ATS over the past decade, including a perfect 3-0 SU/ATS as a favorite, including Marshall’s thumping of Louisville last year. The RedHawks simply have few, if any, weaknesses and are the superior team. Louisville only has a chance if Miami doesn’t come to play. That is highly unlikely for a MAC school playing in a bowl game, as they always show up, and the RedHawks are healthy, focused, and very excited about being in this bowl game. Again, the Cards may keep this close for a half, but we expect Miami to pull away in the second half.
