Yale Bulldogs at Connecticut Huskies 7:00 pm EST

    Yale +22 (2 Units)

Yale is a very experienced team that returns 3 starters and 4 seniors in their lineup this year. Last year was a big disappointment with their 14-13 record (8-6 Ivy) after they tied for the Ivy League title in 2002. They are picked to finish 2nd this year. Connecticut is the preseason #1 team in the country and they return all 5 starters from last season but they might be short on Monday as their point guard will be a game time decision. Taliek Brown will probably not know until Monday if he will play in the opener. "If we were playing in the finals of the NIT he could not have played [Thursday]," Calhoun said. "He could not have played in the biggest game we could have early in the season." Brown was injured at the end of practice Wednesday. The frontcourt of the Huskies is big and experienced but Yale has the bodies to play with them. Emeka Okafor has an advantage over Justin Simon at center but helping Simon is Princeton transfer Dominick Martin who will play a nig role this season for the Bulldogs. Forwards Denham Brown and Marcus White for the Huskies and Paul Vitelli and captain Matt Minoff for Yale match up well. Ben Gordon is the class of the backcourt and along with Taliek, they form the best 1-2 combos around. With Taliek hurt, the point guard position will take a big hit with no real experience on the bench. Taliek makes the Huskies go on both ends of the floor. Offensively, he sets the tempo. Defensively, he is coach Jim Calhoun’s best backcourt stopper. For the Bulldogs, Alex Gamboa and Scott Gaffield can hit the long ball and also dish it out but their best backcourt player is Edwin Draughan who has led the team in scoring the past 2 seasons. Yale shot 503 threes last season, not an exceptional number, but distributed among eight players. The Huskies are overpriced because they are the top team in the country plain and simple. Yale is a typical gritty-gutty team from the Ivy league and should play enough solid defense and control their share of the glass to stay within the big number here.
