NORTHWESTERN +5’ Penn State
Last week’s loss to Ohio State was such a demoralizing loss for a team already disheartened. Northwestern is fourth in the Big Ten in rushing offense, averaging 176.4 yards. with a freshman running back and four new starters along the line, the Nittany Lions are on pace to average almost half as many yards as they did a year ago.
Penn State is among the worst in the conference and the nation in running the football. The Lions are averaging 126.4 yards per game on the ground, which projects to 1,516 yards for the season. Last year, they averaged 228.6 yards a game, or 2,972 yards for the season.
In the past four games, the running game has come to almost a complete halt. The Lions are averaging 55.5 yards per game and failed to reach 50 yards in three of those games. Last Saturday against Ohio State, the Lions rushed for a season-low 33 yards. That surpassed the previous season-low of 38 the week before against Iowa.
The only returning starter is right tackle Chris McKelvy. Senior center David Costlow, sophomore Charles Rush and freshman Levi Brown are all first-year players as well. Scott and Tony Hunt are true freshmen tailbacks.
All the distractions about PSU coach Joe Paterno saying that he will be back next year and many saying that he should not are wearing on this team that again loses outright.
