This is the time of year that Ole Miss does their tank job and let’s face it, whiney Lou Holtz is not the coach you want to face when you are the surprise last undefeated team in SEC Conference play.
Mississippi may on paper be improving on defense, but that includes a shutout of Arkansas State (who cares?) and last week’s great performance against Arkansas. As stated last week before the game, Ole Miss got Arkansas at the right time too. “Arkansas has had their bubble burst losing two straight after a 4-0 start. Arkansas has lost the time of possession battle in both games and scored just 10 points during a seven-quarter stretch” we mentioned in the analysis of our “Game of the Year”.
We continued that Arkansas “had to alter their schedule because it’s their first road night game of the year.” Most importantly they shut down a team that was without tailbacks Cedric Cobbs (hamstring) and De’Arrius Howard (ankle).
The Cocks are running better and better. South Carolina rushed for 218 yards last week to knock off Vanderbilt 35-24 at Williams-Brice Stadium.
The Ole Miss Rebels suddenly find themselves thin at tailback for Saturday’s home game with South Carolina.
Ole Miss coach David Cutcliffe disclosed Thursday evening that senior tailback Ronald McClendon would not play against the Gamecocks because of a potential NCAA rules violation. McClendon, a 190-pound senior from Ponchatoula, La., ranked second among the Rebels’ rushers with 331 yards in the team’s first eight games.
He is also the top kickoff returner.
Wide receivers Chris Collins, Mike Espy and Taye Biddle and cornerback Bryan Brown will handle those duties with McClendon unavailable.
“This is an untimely situation, but we will move forward as normal in preparations for South Carolina,” coach David Cutcliffe said.
The Rebs took a hit last week, when sophomore tailback Vashon Pearson injured his left shoulder in a 19-7 victory over Arkansas
