The Padres lost a tough 2-1 decision last night but we think they rebound tonight under the much-improved Brian Lawrence. This is the time of year we find value going against teams in a “must win situation”. The lines are jacked up because the public is all over these must win teams. Hideo Nomo takes the hill for the Dodgers as a –155 favorite. He has been an underdog or a favorite of no more than –115 in his last 8 road starts. Lawrence meanwhile hasn’t been a home underdog this high since Mark Prior was –155 back on August 5th. Prior and Nomo are not in the same league and thus we have our value for tonight. After a dreadful start, Lawrence has pitched must better of late. He has lost only once since August 5th (against Prior) and the Padres are 5-3 +3.5 in his 8 starts since. They are 3-1 +2.1 his last 4 home starts. He is 6-3 with a 2.12 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 10 career starts against the Dodgers which includes a 2-1 record with a 1.80 ERA and 0.85 WHIP in 3 starts this season. The Dodgers are 1-3 –2.5 in Nomo’s last 4 starts. He is 1-3 with a 5.18 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in 4 starts against San Diego this season. We go with the extra value tonight.
