UCLA Bruins at Utah Utes 5:00 PM ET

    UCLA Bruins -15 -105

Utah was going to be a player in the Mountain West Conference again this season but that is likely over already. The first game against Oregon St. saw quarterback Brian Johnson go down with a concussion, keeping him out for at least another month. Also going down was starting running back Matt Aiata who is out for the season with a broken leg. Making matters worse starting wide receiver Brent Casteel left last week against Air Force with a torn ACL. The three top playmakers are now gone.

UCLA found a way to win last week at home against BYU despite getting outgained by 199 total yards. The Bruins benefited from three costly turnovers by the Cougars and they know that they did get fortunate in that contest so you can expect full focus despite the rash of injuries for the Utes. The Bruins are 7-2 ATS in their last nine non-conference games and they have owned the Mountain West Conference, going 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games against those foes.

The rushing game will play a huge role in this contest. Basically Utah does not have one on offense and cannot stop it on defense. The Utes are averaging a mere 45.5 ypg on the ground through their first two games while the defense has yielded a whopping 287.5 ypg. On the other side, the Bruins are doing just the opposite as they are stopping the run, allowing only 49.5 ypg while the offense is piling up the yards at a 224.5 ypg average. The ypc averages fall right in line as UCLA is +3.3 ypc while Utah is -4.0 ypc.

These rushing numbers tend to carry over and that is especially the case for both of these teams. Utah is 7-19 ATS in its last 26 games after gaining 100 or fewer rushing yards in its last game while the Bruins are 25-10-2 ATS in their last 37 games after allowing 100 or fewer yards on the ground in their last game. Despite missing two key players, the Bruins have a fierce pass rush and that will cause problems for new starting quarterback Tommy Grady. UCLA has accumulated four sacks in each of its first two games.

UCLA is incorporating the West Coast offense this year and so far it has mixed reviews. The Bruins piled up 624 total yards in a 45-17 rout of a bad Stanford team in the opener as quarterback Ben Olson threw for 286 yards and five touchdowns. It was not as good last week against the Cougars and neither was Olsen but expect a turnaround here as the third game is when things tend to gel. Don’t forget that the new offensive coordinator is Jay Norvell, the offensive coordinator the last two seasons at Hawaii. Play UCLA Bruins 1 Unit
