    Carolina Panthers -4 (3 Units)

Carolina finds themselves in a role that they are unfamiliar with and that is a possible playoff team entering this season. John Fox has turned this team around in the one season he has been at the helm and it's because of their defense. Their defense has improved by 87 ypg the last 3 years and their ppg improved by a touchdown from 2001. It wouldn't be surprising if they improved even more this season. The younger players who made up much of last year's defense should be better, and everyone should be more familiar with the system that Fox put in place in his first season. Julius Peppers wants to prove that last year, when he had 12 sacks in 12 games and was named the NFL's defensive rookie of the year, was no fluke. He missed the last four games after violating the league policy on banned substances, and he keeps saying that he wants to show his critics that he can excel without the dietary supplement that contained the banned ingredients and caused his suspension. On offense, the acquisition of Stephen Davis should pay immediate dividends and will help take some pressure off Rodney Peete. Carolina lead in the fourth quarter only to blow a game in the final minutes 5 times last season. While it was Carolina’s defense that took the criticism for many of those late-game collapses, the offense certainly needs to shoulder some of the blame. The Panthers’ offense had a chance to run out the clock in the final minutes and seal the victory. Instead, with a minimal rushing attack, the Panthers ended up going three-and-out, punting and putting the pressure on the defense to close it out. Davis changes that. Overall, they have gotten more experience and gotten better. "I think we've improved the bottom half of our squad and showed that in the preseason by winning all our games," Fox said. "Our depth is better, we're stronger at quarterback then we were last year and we feel good about the additions we've made." Jacksonville seems to be caught in the middle of rebuilding and barely hanging on just to be competitive. The Jaguars released veteran DE Marco Coleman and veteran WR Donald Hayes, two players who were either starters or third on the depth chart only two weeks ago, and kept 13 rookies, including every one of their draft choices. About one-fourth of the roster new head coach Jack Del Rio is taking into the regular-season opener against Carolina will be playing its first NFL game. Mark Brunell is getting old and his weapons keep decreasing. A big hit offensively was the four-game suspension that put Jimmy Smith’s future with the team in serious doubt. Look for Carolina to pressure Brunell on the edges, throw eight men in the box to stop Fred Taylor and control the clock with smart QB play and 35 plus carries for Davis. Carolina should be able to carry some momentum in from last season when they won four of the final five games to finish 7-9, respectable considering the Panthers lost 15 straight in 2001. An undefeated preseason doesn't hurt either. When Carolina wins, they usually cover as they are 51-1-1 ATS when they win SU.
