BYU -3 ½ over Georgia Tech

The new season starts Thursday in Provo, Utah as the Cougars of BYU play host to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Last year the Yellow Jackets lackluster 7-6 record could be pinned on a singular event early in the year, that being running back Tony Hollings going down with a season-ending injury. On the other side of the coin, BYU was trying to figure out just what went wrong in the span of a year. In 2001 the Cougars were one of the feel-good stories in all of college football, challenging the credibility of the BCS up until the final weeks of the season while becoming one of the most ruthless and dangerous offenses in the country. The team lost its two most productive assets at quarterback and running back following that campaign, and that spelled doom for the program once the Mountain West Conference schedule kicked into gear in '02. After having an undefeated conference record (7-0) in 2001, BYU was lucky to steal a pair of wins against San Diego State and Wyoming a year ago. Overall the Cougars finished 5-7 and dropped five of their seven league tilts in head coach Gary Crowton's second year at the helm.

This game marks just the second all-time between these two schools on the gridiron. The first contest took place a year ago in Atlanta, where the Yellow Jackets posted a 28-19 triumph. It was a bittersweet victory for the Yellow Jackets, because that's the day when Hollings went down with a season-ending knee injury. With Hollings not on the squad this year to help carry the load, Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey has no choice but to try out a number of ball carriers in the first few weeks to see who can do the job. The "tailback by committee" approach is a loud statement that their is not one superior runner on the squad. Coach Chan Gailey has also looked hard to find a dependable signal caller and has bypassed last year's starter, A.J. Suggs, in favor of a true freshman, Reggie Ball, who is barely mentioned in Georgia Tech's media guide for this season. When healthy, the Yellow Jackets do have some horses on the offensive line but they are banged up this week which will not help matters offensively. The Yellow Jackets have lost quite a bit on defense through graduation, injury, and disqualification. The Yellow Jackets could have a number of true freshman forced into action and that could spell trouble for this group right out of the gate.

Matt Berry, now a sophomore, will get the majority of the action and play-calling responsibility for BYU this season. The presence of junior running back Marcus Whalen, the team's top runner, should provide the young signal caller with a level of relief, knowing that he can be called upon in a pinch to make the tough yards up the middle. While the BYU offense is in a bit of a rebuilding mode, there is no such construction going on with the defense as TEN of 11 starters are back for an encore. The Cougars also have a new defensive coordinator - Bronco Mendenhall - and figure to be substantially better than a year ago. Mendenhall, who came to Provo from New Mexico, brought with him an attacking "3-3" defense that uses three down linemen, three linebackers and five defensive backs. The defense calls for relentless pressure from a number of directions, meaning quick recognition will be key for Tech. The Jackets plan of starting a true freshman should play right into the hands of the Cougars defensive gameplan.

Look for the Yellow Jackets appear to be out of sync early and often here. After ending its 2002 regular season with a humiliating, 51-7 loss to archrival Georgia and a 30-21 loss to Fresno State in the Silicon Valley Bowl, things have only got worse. In May, the team lost 10 players who were declared academically ineligible , including starting running back Tony Hollings and starting defensive end Tony Hargrove. Greg Gathers is also unable to play due to injury, leaving the team without their best offensive and defensive players once again. The Cougars have to be licking their chops at this chance to avenge last year's loss at Georgia Tech. BYU had more first downs and yards than the Jackets in the game, and we look for them to get their revenge here. The high mountain air certainly won't help Georgia Tech, which will have them fading down the stretch in this contest. The Jackets are 0-3 ATS in their last 3 road openers, and were 0-3 ATS last season on the road as a single-digit dog or with the game rated even. Brigham Young is a sparkling 5-0 ATS over the last 5 years in home/neutral site openers and 4-2 ATS when playing with revenge under Crowton. This one should never be in doubt as BYU gets a double-digit SU win and cover.

6 STAR SELECTION (4.75% of Bankroll)

    NORTHERN ILLINOIS +9 over Maryland

The 15th-ranked Maryland Terrapins open up the 2003 football season on the road in DeKalb against a dangerous MAC-foe in Northern Illinois. Few teams in the country played better down the stretch last season, as Maryland won 10 of its last 11 games, including a 30-3 thrashing of Tennessee in the Peach Bowl. The Huskies are coming off their third consecutive winning season, as Joe Novak's squad went 8-4 last year and made a serious run at the MAC title.

In 2002, the Terrapins were one of the top offensive teams in the ACC, as tailback Chris Downs filled in for injured star Bruce Perry and was impressive. Perry is injured again to start the 2003 campaign, so it will be sophomore Josh Allen's turn in Perry's absence. Scott McBrien is back under center in 2003 and gets three of his top four targets back from last year, including big wideouts Jafar Williams and Latrez Harrison. The Maryland defense will be without one of its stalwarts from the last few years, as Butkus Award winner E.J. Henderson has moved on. The player along the defensive front that teams must gameplan for is tackle Randy Starks. The 6-4, 304-pound junior is a menace in the backfield and has a knack for disruptive play.

The Huskies will always have a chance in most games, thanks in large part to the rushing exploits of Michael Turner. The "Burner" as he is affectionately referred to in DeKalb, burst on the scene in 2002, taking over for injured tailback Thomas Hammock, and really surprising the entire nation. All he did was rush for 1,915 yards, ranking second in the nation in rushing yards, while adding 19 TDs. A balanced attack could be the key to Turner's success and that is where junior quarterback Josh Haldi comes in. Haldi had a fine season last year with 15 TDs and just six interceptions. His top two receivers return, including junior flanker Dan Sheldon. While the Huskies should be able to put points on the scoreboard, the question remains if they can prevent the opposition from doing the same.

Turner will get his yards for NIU keeping the game close and the team in the hunt for the season-opening win. Northern Illinois will not be intimidated by an ACC opponent as the Huskies defeated Wake Forest in their home opener last season, 42-41 in over-time, and now stand a perfect 3-0 ATS versus the ACC the past six years. Maryland also returns a solid team this season, but could easily overlook this small MAC opponent, especially with a huge game at Florida State scheduled for next week-end. Besides the injury to Bruce Perry, many other Terps are hurting including starting quarterback Scott McBrien, wide receiver/returner Steve Suter, offensive lineman Mike Steele, Stephon Heyer, and Lamar Bryant, defensive linemen C.J. Feldheim and Kevin Eli, and linebacker Shane Merriman. Maryland will be happy just to escape with a win and try to get healthy for facing the Seminoles next weekend. The Terrapins record shows they are 0-3 ATS when playing on the road the week prior to facing Florida State. The weather could also be a factor here as there's a decent chance of some rain falling, which usually aids the underdog and hurts a team's passing game, both of which favor the Huskies here. These dogs always play the big boys tough as they are 6-1 ATS as an underdog and 5-0 ATS vs. BCS schools. While we expect Maryland to get out of DeKalb with a win, it won't be easy and Northern Illinois should easily keep the margin within a touchdown and cover the spread.
