The Angels are ice cold right now having lost six straight games and while a return home is a welcome sight, it won’t matter here. The offense has been downright ugly, scoring two or fewer runs in six straight games and hitting just .182 over that span. Los Angeles has dropped four straight series openers and will be facing a hungry Mariners team who came up just short against Johan Santana and the Twins on Thursday. This is just the third road game of the season for Seattle who has faced the daunting Daisuke Matsuzaka and Josh Beckett the first two games.
The Angeles send Joe Saunders to the hill who is pitching on nine days rest, a long gap this early in the season to find any rhythm. He has posted a solid 2.92 ERA this season but he has been fortunate in getting out of trouble. He has a WHIP of 1.62 as his control continues to be a lingering problem. He has walked seven in his first two starts and he brings in a career 1.45 ratio where he has walked 40 while striking out just 65 in 92.1 innings of work. Facing a lefty for the second straight game helps the Mariners offense.
Seattle counters with Miguel Batista who after a rough debut in his Mariners opener, settled down last time out. Against the Rangers, he went 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Two bad pitches resulted in two dingers and other than that, he had a great outing. He will be facing a very cold offense and one that is hitting just .197 against righties over its last 10 games. Seattle has won 24 of its last 29 games when facing a team that scored two runs or less in its previous game.
This is the first road game for Batista and that is a very good thing as he is 11-3 against the money line as a road underdog of +100 or higher over the last two seasons. Play against home favorites with a money line of -110 or higher off two straight road losses against a division rival with a losing record on the season. This situation is 42-22 against the moneyline (65.6 percent) over the last five seasons which is very solid for an underdog spot. Seattle has won 11 of the last 19 games played in Los Angeles.
