Monday's PRO INFO SPORTS Clients only Selection
St. Louis -2 1/2 over Tampa Bay
The defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers take on the St. Louis Rams in Monday Night Football pre-season action. The Bucs haven't skipped a beat this preseason, defeating AFC East foes New York and Miami in its first two contests. Meanwhile, the Rams enter off an ugly 7-6 loss to the Oakland Raiders at the Coliseum.
Tampa head coach Jon Gruden has used his starters sparingly during exhibition play and that won't change here. The first-team offense is not expected to play more than two or three series. Instead, what Johnson and company have done is utilize practice time to prepare for the first three weeks of the regular season when they face a murderer's row of defenses: Philadelphia, Carolina and Atlanta. Place-kicker Martin Gramatica continues to rest his sore groin and will miss his second consecutive preseason game. NFL Europe K Ralf Kleinmann will handle the kicking duties against the Rams.
We do expect to see more from St. Louis here than when we saw them last. Look for Kurt Warner to play at lot more against the Buccaneers, perhaps as much as a quarter and a half, or even the entire first half. Warner the Rams may struggle against Tampa's first-team "D" but should be able to put some points on the board when they go against the back-ups. Despite how well the Bucs have looked this pre-season, defending Super Bowl champs are a good go-against wager, as they had gone 21-37 ATS. In a couple of PRO INFO SPORTS winning side selections we backed Tampa Bay but we are reluctantly going to jump ship here, mostly based on the match-up of Rams first-teamers vs. Bucs back-ups. We also have some sound trends and systems to support St. Louis. In the pre-season, home teams with average defenses (those that finished the previous regular season #11-#20 in points allowed) have covered at about a 75% rate vs. visitors with top 10 rated defenses. Monday Night Football home teams off a SU loss are 12-6 ATS and 13-6 ATS vs. foes off a SU win. We have NO PLAY on the total, as we lean to the OVER, but too many trends point to the UNDER. Our selection here is on St. Louis to win and cover vs. Tampa Bay.
