Atlanta Falcons -3.5 (5 Units) 8:00 pm EST
After watching the Packers game against the Chiefs on Monday night, Green Bay was fortunate they only lost the weather-shortened game by a score of 9-0. The Chiefs had more opportunities but a couple missed plays led them to settling for field goals. What would have happened in the 4th quarter, we don't know. Akili Smith could have given the Packers a shot in the arm and brought them back but we highly doubt it. One thing we did see was Brett Farve getting hammered twice, once on a sack and once on a knockdown. Mike Sherman was probably gasping for air after each one and thus, Favre may not play more than a series or two against the Falcons he confirmed. Part of the reason Favre got hit and was flushed so much was due to the offensive line being banged up. Tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher are expected to miss the Falcons, but might make their preseason debuts in their August 15 game at Cleveland. Clifton is coming back from a separated pelvis and Tauscher from reconstructive knee surgery. Both are practicing once a day. The return of the two starting bookends is one of the keys to the Packers' preseason. And it's not like Favre, Pederson, Nall or Smith will have anyone to throw to anyhow. Donald Driver and Robert Ferguson have been injured much more than they've practiced, and now Javon Walker has a foot injury and won't play Saturday night in Atlanta. Beyond holdover Karsten Bailey and Carl Ford, a seventh-round draft choice from Toledo, the other five wide receivers are little more than "camp" guys, although Antonio Chatman might also make the team as a kick returner. Most of their running backs are banged up as well so expect to see a lot of Davenport who gained a total of 19 yards on 8 carries against Kansas City. Defensively, S Darren Sharper will not play, as he will be resting his shoulder. The Falcons meanwhile come in a very healthy bunch with their only significant injury being that of cornerback Tod McBride (broken right hand/thumb). Dan Reeves is a rare breed of coaches who plays to win in the preseason. His clubs have won 15 of the last 21 games SU the last 5 years and the Falcons are on a current 7-0 ATS run. The story of this game is the playing time of Mike Vick, as you would think they would not take a chance of getting him injured. On the contrary. "Mike needs to play," said Reeves. "He'll start and play into the second quarter. Then Doug [Johnson] will play into the third quarter, and we'll try to get Kurt [Kittner] in there in the fourth." And while Johnson is a dropoff from Vick, he played well in his absence last season and is not as big a dropoff as one would think. The Packers have lost 7 of their last 9 games SU and with the health of their team at the present time, they will make that 8 out of 10 after Saturday.
Kansas City Chiefs -4 (3 Units) 8:30 pm EST
The Chiefs looked good against the Packers on Monday night and now they return home for the first time this preseason. After reviewing Monday's game tape, head coach Dick Vermeil said he was particularly impressed with what he saw from his defense. The first preseason game seemed to confirm that the training-camp emphasis on getting all 11 men to the ball and then making sure tackles once there is paying off. "I thought they tackled well individually with crispness and sharpness." Vermeil said. "We didn't miss any tackles." The defense was the most pleasant thing to see for the Chiefs and they will look to keep it going against the more potent 49ers. "The defense did a good job," continued Vermeil talking about the units that played in the first half. "They're markedly improved. They tackled real well and they've taken the ball away. I'm very pleased with them." The KC Star is reporting that Priest Holmes has resumed his normal practice regimen meaning that the 5 carries on Monday didn't affect him afterwards. For Holmes, the preseason carries are important in another way as well. He's determined to show the Chiefs he's fully healthy and has a right to demand a contract extension and more money. Chiefs president Carl Peterson has said he's willing to negotiate an extension, but only after Holmes proves he's back to full speed. Money is a huge incentive. Vermeil said he plans to play his starters at least through the first quarter. For the 49ers, they will be making the trip without starting QB Jeff Garcia. With Garcia out, Tim Rattay will start Saturday, and backups Brandon Doman and rookie Ken Dorsey, who are contending for the third quarterback spot, will get more playing time against the Chiefs that they normally would have. WR Terrell Owens (groin) was held out of Wednesday morning's session and practiced only sparingly in the afternoon. Erickson termed his condition day-to-day. It seems unlikely he will play Saturday night. It remains unclear whether Jeremy Newberry (left ankle) will start Saturday. If he is unable, Dwayne Ledford is in line to start at center. New head coach Dennis Erickson plans on focusing on just two things in this game and neither has to do with the outcome of the game. "First of all, we look at the execution of the first group and make sure they get better. Are they executing well in the time that they are in there?" he said. "Secondly, and probably most importantly, is the evaluation of the other players on this football team. What is going to be the make up of our 53-man roster? There is some competition out there for 15 or 20 spots, at least." That's enough for us especially with a team having a game already under their belt. Vermeil is 10-1 SU and 9-2 ATS at home vs. an NFC opponent.
Under 39 Carolina/Washington (3 Units) 8:00 pm EST
This total is based on the last season's edition of the preseason Redskins. They came out like gangbusters last preseason finishing 4-1 and scoring a ton but it didn't do much to help them in the regular season. Steve Spurrier realizes that and won't be as keyed up to put the same amount of points on the board. "I maybe got misled by preseason," Spurrier said. "It seems like other teams didn't play their starting defensive guys hardly any. Then when the regular season started, we sort of got overwhelmed a bit." Spurrier is already admitting the Redskins won't be as flashy as they were a year ago. He hasn't been thrilled with his offense lately, particularly the struggles of his quarterbacks and receivers. Patrick Ramsey will get the start Saturday night, and Danny Wuerffel and Rob Johnson will battle behind him. But spotty play all week from the trio has Spurrier convinced the preseason debut may be a struggle for the Redskins. "I don't know if we'll look as good as we did last year in the first preseason game," he said. "We could stink up the joint down there if we don't look a lot better. The quarterbacks and the receivers, we're struggling." This is the first year in quite some time that Washington will be looking for a starting running back. Stephen Davis was let go in Washington after 7 seasons with the Skins, 6 as a starter. A replacement is needed so the majority of the preseason will be spent evaluating backs unlike last year when they were evaluating quarterbacks and airing the ball out on every opportunity. Trung Canidate has looked increasingly sharp in recent practices, and by camp's end he might have shown enough to earn the starting job. It'll be interesting to see how he holds up against Carolina's superb defensive line Saturday night. Chad Morton, Robert Gillespie and Sultan McCullough will also see plenty of time on Saturday. The Skins signed place kicker Matt Simonton and will replace injured kicker John Hall Saturday. Hall has been the talk of Washington as being the savior to the perennially poor kicking game. Without Hall, field goal opportunities will be slim on Saturday. Carolina will rely on their strength, their defense, while they sort out who will be their starting quarterback. The Panthers kept defensive end Julius Peppers out of some drills Thursday after he tweaked a shoulder during a Tuesday workout. But Coach John Fox said that he doesn't expect the shoulder to limit him Saturday. The defense won't be limited to just one series as has happened in the past. "Our firsts (teamers) will play the first quarter, our seconds will get the primary parts of the second and third quarters and our thirds will finish the game up," Fox said. Fox will also like to get former Redskins RB Davis some good time to get a grasp of his new offense. The QB situation is a messy one so don't expect to see any big plays from any of them, as they will try to control the ball, avoid mistakes and simply move the team down the field. Rodney Peete, Jake Delhomme, Chris Weinke and Randy Fasani are all fighting for the starting spot. Peete will start the game and play the first quarter, and Delhomme and Weinke will split time and likely play into the fourth quarter while Fasani finishes the game. We see a much different start for this group of Redskins and with the methodical offense Carolina will put on display, this game should easily stay under the highest total of the night.
Philadelphia - Padilla +105 (3 Units) 4:05 pm EST
Vincente Padilla takes the hill for the Phillies and he has been on a personal roll of late. He has only lost once since June 4th, going 5-1 in the meantime. Philadelphia is 8-2 his last 10 starts and they let a great Padilla performance go for naught in his last start where he allowed just 1 run over 6.1 innings. The Phillies are 4-1 +455 with Padilla in the underdog role. He is 5-4 with a 3.93 ERA on the road this season while he has thrown well against San Francisco in past with a 2.41 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched. Dustin Hermanson got the win in his first start of the season in his new uniform. However, he looked very shaky near the end after cruising through the first few innings. He posted a 5.46 ERA in 23 relief appearances while with the Cardinals and he is 2-4 lifetime against the Phillies with a 3.88 ERA. What hurt him in St. Louis was that he allowed a lot of runners on base and a team like Philadelphia can take advantage with that. He has a .315 BAA and 1.65 ratio in St. Louis, not good numbers for a middle reliever and certainly not good numbers for a starter. The Giants have been one of the best in baseball this season but they are just 6-6 their last 12 games and now send their low level starter to the hill. With Padilla recent success and overall success over San Francisco, he should easily out duel Hermanson in this contest.
Texas - Ellis +170 (3 Units) 4:05 pm EST
The Rangers were playing great baseball before they headed to New York as they lost the series to the Yankees 2-1. Even with that, they are 9-3 their last 12 games including their win over Toronto on Friday. Robert Ellis comes in with a gaudy 8.18 ERA but the damage was done in his 1st of 2 starts on the season. He rebounded with a very solid performance against the very potent Boston Red Sox offense, pitching 7 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs on 6 hits. Toronto is cooked after such a promising start. They are 11-24 their last 35 games and they are just 3-11 their last 14 games at home. The Jays are 2-7 -895 in Escobar's last 9 starts with the two wins coming on the road. On the season, Toronto is 1-7 -1005 in his home starts and 1-8 -1175 as a favorite. With their win on Friday, Texas has won 14 of the last 18 meetings between the two teams including 8 of the last 9 at SkyDome. Obviously all of the numbers and history point to the Rangers but we just hope that Ellis can follow up his recent outing against Boston with another strong effort. We'll be happy with an average one as the Rangers offense should get to Escobar early and often who is 0-2 lifetime against Texas with a 5.17 ERA in 2 career starts and 15 relief appearances.
