Friday's FREE NFL exhibition selection -

    St. Louis +3 OVER OAKLAND

The past two Super Bowl losers meet Friday night at the Coliseum in Oakland, when the St. Louis Rams and the Oakland Raiders open up their respective preseason slates. These former Los Angeles teams have had a lot of success over the past several seasons. The Rams have been to 2 Super Bowls, winning one, while the Raiders are off a trip to the big game and have played in 3 straight AFC championship games.

The Rams, are coming off a terrible season in which they missed the playoffs altogether. Starting quarterback Kurt Warner struggled mightily and ended up missing most the season with a hand injury. Backup quarterback Marc Bulger came on to help the Rams finish with a respectable 7-9 mark. Despite his impressive performance, Bulger will return to the bench in favor of Warner according to head coach Mike Martz. Another key piece to the St. Louis offensive puzzle is running back Marshall Faulk, who struggled with injuries last season. Faulk is finally healthy heading into this contest.

Suddenly, the NFL's best front-runners are accidental tourists in the 2003 Super Bowl race and they are loving every second of it. Veterans are refreshed. Internal optimism abounds and the pressure is gone. Tired bodies - both mentally and physically - have bounced back. Without question, Kurt Warner is the Rams' starting quarterback. He's taken most of the snaps with the first-string offense, and he's showed no signs of being bothered by the hand and finger injuries that dogged him last season. Of course Warner's playing time will be limited to early first quarter, but Marc Bulger is obviously a very strong 2nd-string player who will see his share of action in this game. Greg Zolman, signed just before camp has been impressive and figures to some playing time.

Practice has smelled like "game week" the past few days. The coaches could be heard demanding speed, accuracy and intensity. The players could be heard encouraging and pushing each other. We are expecting a focused, intense team to take the field Friday in Oakland to fact the Raiders.

Oakland has little to prove on offense, so we will see very little from their veteran starters. QB Rich Gannon will play 1-2 series with Marques Tuiasosopo to follow before Tee Martin probably finished up. Rick Mirer has been hobbled and will very limited, if any, mop up time. The Raiders usually confuse opponents with a lot of shifts and multiple formations; however, in this exhibition, they will simply line up and play a very vanilla offense, allowing the Rams to keep them in check.

On defense, the Raiders could be in trouble. Opening against the pass-happy St. Louis Rams the timing couldn't be worse. Both Oakland first-round draft picks from the past two seasons, CBs Phillip Buchanon and Nnamdi Asomugha will be sidelined by injuries, as will a third corner, Clarence Love. Consequently, after starters Charles Woodson and Terrance Shaw leave the game in the early going, the Raiders are in a real fix for d-backs to face Kurt Warner and Mark Bulger and company. The Rams have more offensive weapons, besides the usual suspects and we will likely see them on display here in what we project to be a St. Louis SU win.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: OAKLAND 7 ST. LOUIS 6!

    Friday’s client-only release –

    Tampa Bay +3 over MIAMI

Tampa Bay vs. MIAMI OVER 32

Fresh off an American Bowl victory in Tokyo, the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers return to the United States to take on in-state foe Miami at Pro Player Stadium Friday evening. Tampa took apart the New York Jets in the preseason opener, defeating them 30-14. The Fins will be opening up its preseason after a year in which it just missed the postseason after another December to forget.

Miami doesn't have a quarterback controversy brewing. Yet. Despite the recent signing of Brian Griese, head coach Dave Wannstedt insists that Jay Fiedler is his starter. Griese could find his way into the lineup if Fiedler struggles or gets hurt. It looks like Griese will get an early opportunity as Fiedler is suffering from back spasms and will play little, if at all, against the Bucs. For Wannstedt and the team, Fiedler's pain is part of a growing number of Dolphins ailments, despite Wannstedt's efforts to preserve his starters. This week, cornerback Patrick Surtain and defensive end Rob Burnett each had to undergo knee surgery. They are expected to miss all of the exhibition season but return for the regular season. Receiver Oronde Gadsden suffered a dislocated foot in practice last week and is also expected to miss the preseason, perhaps affecting his chance of making the team. In addition, receiver Chris Chambers, defensive end Adewale Ogunleye and defensive tackle Tim Bowens have missed practice with an assortment of ailments.

Fourth-string QB Lon Sheriff, who has received extra work because of Jay Fiedler's back spasms, is a work in progress. He'll probably see some 4th quarter action after Griese plays the first quarter and Sage Rosenfels takes over until the 4th quarter. Despite Griese's starting experience in Denver, he is still getting familiar with OC Norv Turner's system and with Miami thin in the Wide receivers department, we don't see this as a good match-up for the Dolphins "O" vs. Tampa's defense. They should have a little more success than the Jets did last weekend in Japan, but we still favor the Buccaneer QB rotation.

Tampa Bay's Brad Johnson will play a good series or 2, before giving way to Shaun King and rookie Chris Simms. Veteran Jim Miller may also see some mop-up duty. Some starters participated in only three plays in last week's game, and that should remain the same this week against Miami, though Gruden said the starting offensive linemen likely will play longer. We were very impressed by the play of King and Simms in the victory over the Jets. King's solid play should continue in Friday's exhibition as Miami has an unsettled secondary. Don't be surprised to see another good showing from Simms. The third-round pick completed 8-of-11 passes for 79 yards, including one for a touchdown to pace the Bucs off the bench. The Bucs offense was so efficient that they did not even have to punt during the game, converting 11 of 13 third downs!

While a case can be made that Tampa will still be suffering from Japanese jet lag, other factors may negate that fact. While Miami has been sweating away in the heat and humidity of the Sunshine State since the start of training camp, the Bucs enjoyed a break with the trip overseas. They got a 2-day break when they returned and may actually be the fresher, crisper team in this game. In a PRO INFO SPORTS Pre-Season Power System, the NFL is 40-18-8 as an underdog or favorite of less than 4 points in their 2nd game vs. an opponent in their opener. We also note that the Dolphins are just 11-16-2 as a favorite, while Wannstedt is a very poor 1-9-2 ATS as a favorite of 3 or less points. Over the past 2 pre-seasons under Miami's head man, the Fins are 0-4 SU/ATS at home.

With Jon Gruden pushing the World Champs as hard as ever, we don't expect a let down here. Look for their aggressive play to continue. Again, we also expect Miami to have some success moving the football and to put some points on the board. These Tampa Bay-Miami pre-season tilts have a history of going UNDER, but we are going to buck that trend here, due to the better-than-average quarterback rotations. With such a low total we’ll recommend playing the over along with our side selection on the Bucs.

ACTUAL FINAL SCORE: TAMPA BAY 20 MIAMI 19!
