How does PRO INFO SPORTS pre-season handicapping differ from the regular season?

The first and main factor to handicapping the preseason is the coach of the team. Unlike the regular season, it is the single strongest indicator of the outcome of the game. The coach determines who plays and for how long. The primary goal of a coach during preseason is not necessarily to win the game; the primary goal of a coach in preseason is to get ready to win in the regular season. Some coaches want to win in the preseason to establish a winning attitude. New coaches with young teams tend to work very hard in the preseason and look to win. The young guys are often fighting to make a name for themselves and tend to play with a higher level of intensity. The veterans have already established their ability and do not like to risk injury. Older teams with veteran coaches tend to give their future talent a closer look and don't care as much about the outcome of the game. Teams with a tradition of winning normally don't put too much stock in winning their preseason games, particularly when playing an inferior or younger team that might be 'gunning' for them.

PRO INFO SPORTS considers a team's motivation, looking at those teams who really have nothing to prove, looking for exhibition games in which one coach cares and the other could not care less. Teams that are already set for the upcoming season really don't want to go all out during the preseason, so they can be an extremely profitable go-against team. When a team did well the previous year, they will have much less to prove then a team that was 2-14. The team that was 2-14 may try real hard to break the losing pattern by starting their year off with some wins. For this reason, the bad teams are often good exhibition investments.

Coaches also tend to place emphasis on winning during certain weeks of the preseason schedule. Some will use Week Three as their "dress rehearsal" for the regular season giving his starters extended playing time and then resting them in Week Four. Others focus on Week Four to instill a winning attitude and establish positive momentum for the upcoming season. Who are the play on or play against coaches and what teams excel in certain weeks of the pre-season?

Another key ingredient for investing success in the pre-season is determining the quarterback rotation used by the team, how long a signal caller will play, and in what quarter(s). Teams with established QBs tend to play less in the pre-season due to the possibility of injury with the bulk of the action shared by the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th string QBs; therefore, we focus on teams that have experience and solid depth at QB as well as teams that have intense competition for the starting and backup positions. An excellent investment opportunity will usually occur when a coach must decide between two potential starting quarterbacks. In order to compare the two candidates the coach is likely to use most of his first string offense for an extended period - including his best receivers, best running backs, and best offensive linemen. You can also figure both quarterbacks want that starting job, so both are likely to play their best behind that first string. That particular situation is intensified if the other team is - strangely enough - an extra good defensive team! An opposing team with locked-in starters on their defense is very likely to be auditioning new defensive talent. After a brief 'tune-up' period for his defensive starters, the opposing coach is likely to pull his 'A' players. That leaves a bunch of try-out defensive players facing a first-string offense and a hungry talented quarterback. QB battles can result in strong performances by highly motivated players giving their all in hopes of winning the starting or backup role. As an example, the Cleveland Browns have a major QB controversy on their hands as Kelly Holcomb tries to wrest the starting job away from incumbent Tim Couch. Look for both of these QBs to play to the best of their abilities to impress Butch Davis in order to gain the starting nod. Some other heated QB competitions to watch are: Dolphins - Fiedler vs. Griese, Cowboys - Hutchinson vs. Carter, Panthers - Peete vs. Delhomme, and Rams - Warner vs. Bulger.

Another concern during the pre-season is the competence of each team's second, third, and even fourth string players. It is these players that are going to ultimately decide the outcome in most cases. They are the ones playing late in the game, when most point spread decisions are made. We closely examine the depth of a team in important positions. We especially look at teams deep in the quarterback and running back position. For example, a few years back, the Denver Broncos had Brian Griese starting, Steve Beurlein and Gus Frerotte battling for the backup position. These were players that were starters for other teams. That gave them a huge edge when playing in the latter stages of a preseason game. The Broncos also had the luxury of having three 1,000 rushers on their team, so they were extremely deep in a position that was important when it pertained to the second half.

A big edge PRO INFO SPORTS enjoys is access to teams' local contacts and information which provides us with important details on the status of each team, their upcoming preseason game, their plans on player rotations, injuries and what the coach is trying to accomplish for each game and how he plans to go about it. The preseason is NOT about stats, it is about information on each game, and the plan in place in each team for that game and the objectives coaches are looking for. We dig deep to uncover who will be held out of a game, how long each team plans on using their starters, and what phase of their game their major concentration will be on in the upcoming game. This is simply essential information when handicapping the preseason. If "TEAM A" plans on playing their starters for a full half and "TEAM B" only plans on using their starters for a series or two, "TEAM A" obviously has a huge advantage before we look at anything else.

Finally, we crunch all the trends, angles, and system numbers, examining various scenarios. Here is an example of a PRO INFO SPORTS POWER SYSTEM that has yet to lose in pre-season play since 1986: Pre-season underdogs of more than 7 points are 14-0 ATS if they scored more than 14 points in their previous exhibition game. Actually any preseason dog of more than 7 points is worth a long look as they are 33-16 ATS (67.3%) overall. If their foe is off a win, the big dogs are 21-6 ATS (77.7%), and if both teams are off wins, the pups are 9-1 ATS (90.0%).
