  • Atlanta Braves @ Montreal Expos

The Atlanta Braves tonight look to improve on the best record in baseball when they take on NL East rivals the Montreal Expos.

The Braves have won 15 of their past 18 to improve to 67-34 (.663) and a 9 1/2 game division lead over the Phillies.

Rookie left-hander Horacio Ramirez takes the hill for the Braves as he looks to continue a solid start to what should be a long career in the majors. The southpaw's .727 winning percentage (8-3 record) ranks fourth in the National League but maybe somewhat flattering as Atlanta have given him excellent offensive support in almost every start. Ramirez allowed four earned runs in just 4 2/3 innings against the Mets Sunday but escaped without figuring in the decision thanks to Atlanta's amazing eight-run eighth-inning. Prior to that start he was shelled for seven earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings against the Cubs so it wouldn't surprise if the Expos got the scoreboard ticking over early. In their last three home series the Expos are averaging almost five runs per game.

Montreal have won their last two and are now 52-50 (.510) overall to be 15 1/2 games back from Atlanta.

They will counter with Claudio Vargas who is 6-6 with a 3.55 ERA. The 25 year-old rookie right-hander has been very disappointing recently going 0-3 in his last three starts with a 7.31 ERA. Those are scary numbers when you're about to face the heavy-hitting Atlanta Braves who have scored an average of seven runs per game since July 6. This season the Braves are 42-30 Over against right-handers.

Thirteen of Atlanta's last sixteen games have seen 9 or more runs scored and we're very confident of that continuing tonight.
