  • Massive beef recall reaches local shelves; meat pulled at Wal-Mart

On Saturday, Topps Meat Co. expanded its Sept. 25 recall of 21.7 million pounds of ground beef that reached grocery shelves throughout the country, including some in Athens.

Topps products are distributed in Wal-Mart stores across the state of Ohio, a representative from the Ohio Department of Agriculture confirmed. This includes the Wal-Mart at 929 E. State St. in Athens.

Topps, based in Elizabeth, N.J., voluntarily recalled certain frozen ground-beef products because they may have been contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced in a Sept. 27 news release.

According to the release, "E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration. The very young, seniors and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness."

The initial announcement said the frozen ground-beef products being recalled have a "sell by date" or a "best if used by date" between Sept. 25, 2007 and Sept. 25, 2008.

The Oct. 6 update of the massive recall includes four products with the establishment number of 5712 inside the USDA mark of inspection. The recall previously included products with establishment number 9748. The numbers can be found on the back of the meat package and are printed in ink or on a sticker, explained a voice recording from the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline (1-888-674-6854).

All products being recalled should be returned to the point of purchase, according to the USDA release.

Keith Adams, store manager of the Wal-Mart in Athens, said the Topps Meat Co. recall did affect his store and that all affected products and more have been pulled off the shelves. Although he said he did not know how much actual meat was removed from the store, all Topps products were removed with the Sept. 25 recall.
