    Linesmaker Frank Carulli's race comments

    RACE TWELVE-Preakness Stakes

FUNNY CIDE will try to become the seventh gelding and 31st Kentucky Derby winner to win the Preakness. He tucked in behind dueling leaders in the Derby and should sit a good stalking trip despite drawing post 9. Barclay Tagg launched his career in Maryland.

PEACE RULES has been 1-2 at every call in his last seven starts except when favored Empire Maker nipped him for second in the Kentucky Derby. He won graded stakes at three tracks and was under a snug hold until he took the Derby lead after six furlongs.

SENOR SWINGER was well-beaten in two Grade I dirt races but bounced back to win the Grade III Crown Royal on a Churchill turf course that favored closers. Trainer Bob Baffert has saddled four of the last six Preakness winners.

SCRIMSHAW had troubled starts in four graded stakes tries. He recovered to win the Grade II Lexington in his first start after throat surgery, but he flattened out in the stretch after reaching contention in the Kentucky Derby. He and Senor Swinger are coupled.

TEN CENTS A SHINE'S three bullet workouts at Churchill Downs in the last month belie his recent graded stakes form. Wayne Lukas, a five-time Preakness-winning trainer, blamed poor racing luck in the Derby and said the Ohio-bred can reverse form Saturday.

KISSIN SAINT proved a shrewd $50,000 claim when he overcame a bumped break to finish third in the Wood Memorial behind the eventual 1-2 Kentucky Derby Finishers. Trainer Lisa Lewis' mother saddled Hegar to a ninth-place finish in the 1993 Preakness.

NEW YORK HERO tired on a clear lead in the Wood and could be the pace-setter in here, though trainer Jennifer Pedersen hinted that the Maryland-bred will be rated from off the pace. Only one horse has gone gate-to-wire in the Preakness since 1982.

MIDWAY ROAD is the only non-graded stakes-placed runner in field, but his 11-length win at Keeneland prompted an unusual move by trainer Neil Howard, who told Daily Racing Form: "It's not our M.O. But I didn't have any real hard and fast reservations."

CHEROKEE'S BOY is owned by Foard Wilgis and Dave Picarello of Baltimore. He won five restricted stakes and set a moderate pace to win the Tesio and go 3-3 at Pimlico. Jockey Ryan Fogelsonger was a 1 year old the last time a Md-bred won the Preakness.

FOUFA'S WARRIOR rallied from far back to finish third at 11-1 and 33-1 in graded stakes and will be a popular play on trifecta tickets again. Trainer Larry Murray and owner Sondra Bender teamed for seven stakes victories in Maryland last year.
