Without watching a single episode of “The Casino,” we have learned that big changes are afoot at the Golden Nugget. Under the direction of Chris Andrews, the Golden Nugget sports book is poised to become the downtown dominator.
At any moment, Andrews will formally announce his high-end football contest. The buy-in is $5,000. The top five finishers will split $500,000, with $250,000 going to the winner! The cash prizes will be even higher if more than 100 people enter.
The contest is modeled on the long-running Hilton SuperContest, which also has an antecedent – the “Ultimate Challenge” created in 1978 by the late Sonny Reizner at the fondly remembered Castaways.
Besides the higher entry fee, the Golden Nugget promotion differs from the SuperContest in that participants designate one of their five picks as a “best bet,” a double play for scorekeeping purposes. The selections are made against an established pointspread. Multiple entries are allowed. The contest is open to non-state residents, but all picks must be submitted in person by the contestant or his pre-qualified proxy.
