SUPER BOWL PREVIEW
==================================
Tampa Bay (14-4) vs Oakland (13-4)
Matchups for Sunday's Super Bowl between the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
WHEN THE RAIDERS HAVE THE BALL
This is the marquee matchup: The NFL's top-rated offense (Oakland) against the top-rated defense (Tampa Bay). It's the first time that's happened in a Super Bowl.
Under first-year coach Bill Callahan, the Raiders threw more passes than any team except St. Louis, 38.7 a game. Quarterback Rich Gannon (12) won the NFL's MVP award, throwing for 4,689 yards and 26 touchdowns. His targets include 40-year-old Jerry Rice (80) and 36-year-old Tim Brown (81) as well as Jerry Porter (84), who gives them fresh legs and a deep threat. Charlie Garner (25) was the team's leading rusher and was second in receptions with 91 catches, one fewer than Rice. Rookie tight end Doug Jolley (88) has given Gannon a fifth receiving option. Randy Jordan (28) can be productive as a third-down back and both Tyrone Wheatley (47) and Zack Crockett (32) are productive in short-yardage situations.
One reason for all the passing is a huge offensive line led by right tackle Lincoln Kennedy (79) and center Barret Robbins (63), one of the best pass protection units in the league. All five starters weigh more than 300 pounds, with Kennedy the heaviest at
335. But Gannon's short drops, quick release and mobility help him avoid getting hit a lot.
The Raiders will encounter the NFL's quickest defense, one that shut down scramblers Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb. Linebacker Derrick Brooks (55) was the NFL's defensive player of the year, scoring four TDs, three on interception returns and one on a fumble. Shelton Quarles (53) is one of the NFL's quickest middle linebackers. End Simeon Rice (97) led the NFC in sacks with 15 ½, and tackle Warren Sapp (99) has been one of the NFL's top interior defensive linemen for the past half-dozen years.
But the secondary may be the real strength of the defense, which held opponents to 12.3 points a game. Cornerback Ronde Barber (20) dominated the NFC championship game against Philadelphia and capped it with a 92-yard INT return. Brian Kelly (25), the other cornerback, tied for the league lead in INTs with eight. Strong safety John Lynch (47) is the best in the league at his position, a ferocious run-stopper.
WHEN THE BUCCANEERS HAVE THE BALL
The Tampa Bay offense has always be an afterthought to the defense. Even with the arrival of offensive-minded head coach Jon Gruden, it still ranked 24th of 32 teams.
But it's been able to produce points when needed, particularly when quarterback Brad Johnson (14) has been healthy. He's an efficient passer with tall targets, wide receivers Keyshawn Johnson (19), Keenan McCardell (87) and Joe Jurevicius (83), whose only catch in the NFC championship game was a 71-yard play that gave the Bucs momentum they never lost. Tight ends Ken Dilger (85) and Rickey Dudley (85) are also big targets, although none of the receivers has great breakaway speed.
The running game is deceptive. Michael Pittman (32) led the team with 718 yards rushing but Mike Alstott (40), gets the key yardage. The Bucs ran for only 49 yards against the Eagles, but Alstott had several big short-yardage plays.
The offensive line was a problem early but has improved late, especially left tackle Roman Oben (72), a journeyman who seems finally to have matured in his seventh season. The rest of the line has protected the quarterback well, but it isn't the best run-blocking unit in the league.
The Raiders' defense has been rebuilt almost from scratch. Key acquisitions were defensive tackles Sam Adams (95) and John Parrella (97), who have solidified the run defense. DeLawrence Grant (99) and Rod Coleman (57) are the defensive ends, but the Raiders use a rotation system that also includes Chris Cooper (75) and Regan Upshaw (91).
The linebacking has been upgraded with youngsters, especially rookie middle linebacker Napoleon Harris (58) and first-year starter Eric Barton (50), who added speed to what was a sluggish unit. But the key newcomer is 15-year veteran Bill Romanowski (53) who has four Super Bowl rings, two each with Denver and San Francisco. At 36, Romanowski brings experience and fire to the defense, and if the Raiders win, he will tie Charles Haley, formerly of the 49ers and Cowboys, with five Super Bowl victories.
The other veteran is free safety Rod Woodson (26) who at 37 had his best season in nearly a decade, tying Kelly for the league lead in interceptions. He has helped the other five DBs who play a lot, cornerbacks Charles Woodson (24), Tory James (20) and Terrence Shaw (22) and safeties Anthony Dorsett (33). Woodson is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL when healthy but will be playing with a titanium plate to protect a broken leg. James also will be playing with a plate in his leg.
COACHING
Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden was Oakland's coach last season and the Raiders' Bill Callahan was his offensive coordinator. Much of Gruden's old staff remains in Oakland. But the Oakland staff also includes, as it has for years, such ex-Raiders as Fred Biletnikoff and Willie Brown, who has been with the team as player and coach for 40 years.
Gruden has brought the West Coast offense to Tampa Bay; Callahan has made some changes to Gruden's system, which features more short passes. Chuck Bresnahan is the defensive coordinator, as he was under Gruden, but his schemes are more aggressive because he has more speed at linebacker.
The Bucs' defensive staff, headed by Monte Kiffin, is the same one that rebuilt Tampa Bay's defense under Tony Dungy. Its specialty is ``cover two'' zone with pressure from the front four, but Kiffin has made a few refinements and the improved offense has
given the defenders more rest.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Both kickers, Tampa Bay's Martin Gramatica (7) and Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski (11), are among the best in the league. Janikowski was the first kicker in 20 years to be drafted in the first round when he was taken in 2000. Gramatica was 32-of-39 this year; Janikowski was 24-of-31, including 2-of-2 from 50 yards or more.
Both punters are veterans, Shane Lechler (9) for Oakland and Tom Tupa (9) for Tampa Bay. Tupa gives the Bucs an option for the fake, he once was a starting quarterback for Arizona.
The Bucs have never had a kickoff returned for a touchdown but Aaron Stecker (27) has consistently given them decent field position. Karl Williams (86) is both the fourth wide receiver and the punt returner.
The Raiders' return game is ordinary since rookie Phillip Buchanon was lost for the season. Alvis Whitted (87) was the only deep returner on kicks in the AFC title game. Marcus Knight (85) has also done it.
INTANGIBLES
One is history. The Raiders were one of the elite teams through the 1960s and '70s, and have three Super Bowl victories, the last in 1984. Since then, they have been up and down, slightly above .500, but certainly not at the bottom.
The Bucs, created in 1976, lost the first 26 games they played, got to the NFC championship game in 1979 and then crashed. From 1983-96, they never had a winning season and lost 10 or more games in 12 consecutive seasons and 13 of 14. But they're the only team in the NFL to have made the playoffs the last four seasons. They reached the NFC title game in 2000, losing 11-6 to the Rams.
The closeness of the coaching staffs also creates intriguing possibilities. Gruden knows firsthand the strengths and weaknesses of most of the Oakland players.

SUPER BOWL PREVIEW
==================================
