      Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Early odds to win the 2014 World Series (from RJ Bell in Las Vegas)....... ......the pithy comments are all mine.

Dodgers 5-1-- Will they go after Tanaka, the Japanese pitcher?

Tigers 8-1-- No matter who new manager is, it won't be an upgrade.

Cardinals 10-1-- Will have to replace Beltran's bat in lineup.

Red Sox 12-1-- Will other teams hire Bobby Valentine, have one miserable season, then replace him with a guy who by comparison is a genius?

A's/Angels/Reds 15-1-- Cincinnati hired its pitching coach as manager.

Bronx/Texas 16-1-- Nolan Ryan leaving Rangers front office won't help.

      *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Our NFL List of 13.......

      32) Jaguars—Its not good when a team’s best week of the season is their bye week, but…….

      31) Buccaneers—Tampa to Seattle is a long plane trip to get spanked. Bucs are 17-point dogs this week, and Seattle’s offense was putrid Monday night. Good luck there.

      30) Vikings—Please decide on a QB; one of these three, or Bob Lee or Joe Kapp or Gary Cuozzo. Just pick one and let him play.

      29) Eagles—Wonder if Chip Kelly has called his agent and asked, “When does the NCAA’s show cause order against me run out?”

      28) Steelers—You can’t allow the longest run by a QB in NFL history on the first play of the game. Worse yet, it was obvious Pryor was scoring when he crossed his own 25-yard line. Be ready to play—they weren’t in Oakland.

      8) Bengals—Averaged over 10 yards per pass attempt in each of last two games--- that doesn't happen much.

      7) Colts—This week will be first game Reggie Wayne has missed since '01.

      6) Packers—RB Lacy gives their offense excellent balance; when they get some WRs back from injury, will be even better on offense.

      5) 49ers—Bully team; they whack the weak sisters, but got beat pretty good by Seahawks/Colts.

      4) Chiefs—Buffalo, then bye week, then Denver twice in three weeks, with division rival Chargers in between. What a great year they’re having.

      3) Seahawks—As a Ram fan, makes me sick losing that game Monday nite. There is no way Seattle beats the Saints in January if the game is on Bourbon Street-- game might not be there, though.

      2) Saints—On a neutral field, think Saints are NFC’s best, but if they have to go to Seattle in January, can they win there?

      1) Broncos—What percentage of our nation’s football fans know who Peyton Manning’s backup is? Hint: He played in college at Arizona State.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

The Cincinnati Bengals gave bettors 49 reasons to believe they're among the contenders in the AFC this past Sunday, thumping the New York Jets 49-9 as 6-point home favorites.

That lopsided win improved the Bengals to 6-2 (5-2-1 ATS) on the year, and has them riding a four-game streak into Thursday’s primetime date in Miami, where the Fins hope to snap a four-game losing skid.

But despite Week 8’s blowout – and the fact Cincy has beaten Super Bowl contenders like Green Bay and New England – books have set the Bengals as slim 1-point road chalk versus the reeling Dolphins.

The Bengals offense stalled out of the gate, with QB Andy Dalton falling short of preseason expectations. However, Dalton has topped 300 yards passing in three straight games, connecting for 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions in that span.

The Dolphins have allowed an average of 28.5 points while coughing the ball up 10 times during this four-game slide. Miami can’t afford to give this Cincinnati offense any extra cracks at the end zone, especially with a spread so small.

        NFL

New Orleans Saints at New York Jets (+5.5, 45.5)

As mentioned above, the Jets allowed the Bengals to light it up for 325 yards passing and five TDs through the air this Sunday. And somehow, books expect them to keep Drew Brees and the Saints within six points?

Yeah, this game is outside in the Meadowlands, where early weather reports say temperatures in the low 50s and 11 mph winds. And yes, the Jets will definitely have the pride factor, wanting to make up for last weekend’s letdown.

Head coach Rex Ryan didn’t want to further poison his team after the loss to Cincinnati and skipped film session Monday, stating “If we don't play better pass defense than we played this past week, (Brees) will throw for 700 yards."

With the bye around the corner and plenty of questions surrounding the team after alternating wins and losses all season, New York could be counting down the days until some time off.

The Saints average 269.7 yards passing away from the Big Easy – compared to 341.5 at home – and don’t score nearly as many points on the road as they do inside the Superdome. But getting a 6-1 team that just put up 332 yards passing and five TDs at this spread seems like a belated Halloween treat.

        NCAAF

Tennessee Volunteers at Missouri Tigers (-11)

The love affair with Missouri seems to be over.

Following the Tigers’ first loss of the season to South Carolina in overtime last week, oddsmakers are discounting Mizzou versus Tennessee at home in Week 10. Books are dealing the Tigers as 11-point home favorites, which actually came down from as high as -13 at some markets. Missouri is a fourth-quarter collapse away from being undefeated and takes on a Vols side facing some uncertainty under center.

Tennessee QB Justin Worley re-aggravated a hand injury in last weekend’s loss to Alabama, turning the offense over to true freshman Joshua Dobbs. Dobbs went 5-for-12 for 75 yards and added 19 yards on the ground against the defending national champs.

With Worley listed as day-to-day, it looks more likely that Dobbs could get the nod against a pissed off Missouri program, which leads the SEC in sacks with 25 on the year.

NBA TNT doubleheader: Knicks at Bulls, Warriors at Clippers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Chicago Bulls (-8.5, 188.5)

Derrick Rose looks to shake off a subpar return as he plays at home for the first time in 17-plus months when the Chicago Bulls tangle with the New York Knicks on Thursday night. Rose was just 4-of-15 shooting for 12 points and had more turnovers (five) than assists (four) in his return from major knee surgery in Chicago’s loss to the Miami Heat. “I don’t think I forced anything,” Rose said after Tuesday’s contest. “I just couldn’t knock down any shots. I don’t think it was rust.”

New York opened its season with a victory over Milwaukee on Wednesday in a game in which the Knicks let a 25-point second-half lead slip away before fighting off the Bucks. Center Tyson Chandler elected to take the view that the close call was of benefit to his team. “We want to put teams away, especially (when) you’re going into a back-to-back so you have an opportunity to rest,” Chandler said. “But like I say, at the end of the day, learning experience, and I’d rather learn with a win than a loss.”

          TV: 8 p.m. ET, TNT
LINE: Bulls opened at -7.5 and were bet up to -8.5. The total opened at 190.5 and has come down to 188.5.
          NBA POWER RANKINGS: Knicks (-8.5) - Bulls (-13.3) + Home court (-3.0) = Bulls -7.8

ABOUT THE KNICKS (1-0): The status of point guard Raymond Felton is a concern after he tweaked a hamstring in the opener. New York coach Mike Woodson said Felton’s availability would be decided shortly before game time even though Felton was insisting he would be in the lineup. “Hopefully it goes away,” Felton said after scoring 18 points against the Bucks. “It’s one of those things where it can last two to three days but it can last up to six weeks.” Forward Carmelo Anthony had 19 points and 10 rebounds against Milwaukee.

ABOUT THE BULLS (0-1): Chicago was overly hyped for the challenge of facing defending champion Miami, but the way the Bulls fell behind early and were not in the game made the defeat even more disappointing. “It’s not the end of the world,” Rose said. “This will be easily forgotten. We have the whole season to make a statement. For us, it’s building every game.” The one Chicago standout was forward Carlos Boozer, who repeatedly had his way inside with 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting in addition to grabbing seven rebounds.

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
          * Knicks are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings in Chicago.
          * Knicks are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings.
          * Underdog is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Chicago went 4-0 against the Knicks last season and has won the last five meetings.

          2. Knicks SG J.R. Smith is serving a five-game suspension for violating the league’s drug policy.

          3. Bulls C Joakim Noah (groin) was limited to 20 minutes in the opener but did grab 11 rebounds.

Golden State Warriors at Los Angeles Clippers (-6.5, 203)

The Los Angeles Clippers endured a disappointing season debut under new coach Doc Rivers, especially at the defensive end. The Clippers will look to avoid falling into an early hole in the Pacific Division when they host the Golden State Warriors on Thursday. Rivers built strong defensive teams with the Boston Celtics but watched Los Angeles struggle mightily in a season-opening loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Warriors had the opposite experience against the Lakers in their opener on Wednesday, getting 38 points from Klay Thompson in a 125-94 blowout. Rivers lamented his teams’ lack of preparation. “(The Lakers) destroyed us on the glass and destroyed us in turnovers,” Rivers said. “So it was a good lesson for us.” Golden State controlled the glass in its opener despite holding its entire frontcourt to 27 minutes or fewer on Wednesday.

          TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT
LINE: The Clippers opened -7 and have come down to -6.5. The total opened at 203 and has jumped to 203.5.
          COVERS POWER RANKINGS: Warriors (-9.0) - Clippers (-13.5) + Home Court (-3.0) = Clippers -7.5

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (1-0): Golden State finished second to the Clippers in the Pacific Division in 2012-13 and is looking to challenge for the top spot this season after bringing in Andre Iguodala to supplement the perimeter defense and display toughness on the wing. Iguodala only scored seven points on Wednesday but helped spread the defense for Thompson while providing one of the highlights of the night on a behind-the-back give-and-go exchange with David Lee. The Warriors led the NBA in 3-point percentage in 2012-13 and showed no signs of slowing down by burying 15-of-27 from beyond the arc in the opener, led by Thompson’s 5-of-7 performance.

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (0-1): Los Angeles held a slim lead for most of its opener before being blown out in the fourth quarter by the Lakers’ reserves in a 116-103 setback. “The good thing is we have 81 more games,” Rivers said. “The bad thing is everyone is going to play us (hard).” Blake Griffin scored 19 points but struggled on the defensive end while the Clippers were outrebounded. Los Angeles is working in newcomers J.J. Redick and Jared Dudley and had the two split time with Matt Barnes and Jamal Crawford.

          TRENDS:

          * Over is 5-0 in the last five meetings.
          * Warriors are 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
          * Warriors are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Los Angeles.
          * Underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Golden State F Harrison Barnes (foot) sat out the opener and is not expected to play until the weekend.

          2. Griffin shot 47.2 percent from the field against the Warriors last season - his lowest mark against any Pacific rival.

          3. Golden State took three of the four meetings last season, with the lone loss coming at Los Angeles on Jan. 5, 115-89.

Predators at Coyotes: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nashville Predators at Phoenix Coyotes (-162, 5)

The Phoenix Coyotes attempt to earn coach Dave Tippett a spot in the franchise record book when they conclude a three-game homestand against the Nashville Predators on Thursday. With 164 victories, Tippett is one behind Bob Francis for first place on the franchise list. Phoenix got the fifth-year coach to this spot with a 3-1 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, when Mike Smith made 41 saves and Kyle Chipchura recorded a goal and an assist.

The Coyotes improved to 5-0-1 at home with the victory and have earned at least one point in nine of their last 10 games. Nashville looks to rebound from an ugly loss as it begins a franchise record-tying seven-game road trip. The Predators have been idle since Saturday, when they suffered a 6-1 loss at home to the St. Louis Blues.

TV: 10 p.m. ET, FSN Tennessee (Nashville), FSN Arizona (Phoenix)

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (6-5-1): Carter Hutton has recorded mixed results since taking over for Pekka Rinne (infected hip), posting an overtime win over Winnipeg before being pulled after allowing five goals on 26 shots Saturday. Magnus Hellberg made his NHL debut in relief and stopped three of the four shots he faced. Defenseman Roman Josi, who hasn't played since Oct. 4 due to a concussion, may return to action Thursday.

ABOUT THE COYOTES (8-3-2): Chipchura recorded one goal in his first 12 games this season before his two-point effort against Los Angeles. Center Andy Miele notched his first two NHL points - two assists - in his season debut Tuesday after eight games without a point over the previous two campaigns. Center Martin Hanzal will miss Thursday's contest as he finishes serving his two-game suspension for a charging incident against Edmonton on Saturday.

            TRENDS:

            * Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
            * Predators are 1-4 in the last five meetings.
            * Predators are 1-6 in their last seven vs. Pacific.
            * Coyotes are 4-1 in their last five overall.

            OVERTIME:

            1. Coyotes LW Lauri Korpikoski (upper body) practiced with the team Wednesday and could return after a three-game absence.

            2. Nashville is 5-0-1 when scoring the game's first goal.

            3. The Predators have had two seven-game road trips in the past, most recently from Jan. 22-Feb. 5.

You betcha, kb! There's new posts in both the football threads. I don't think they're showing as new posts on the Member's Picks board, though.
