  • More Media Stupidity

I despise how the media continuously plays Monday morning QB.

When is a game truly over?
    Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

My colleague Mike Sando from the NFC West blog has an interesting take on the Anquan Boldin hit late in the Cardinals' lopsided loss to the Jets. Ken Whisenhunt and Eric Mangini were going full tilt even though the game had long been decided.

I can't watch the play anymore. It's just sickening. There's no excuse for taking a shot at a defenseless receiver -- especially in that situation. Take away the fact that Eric Smith was leading with his helmet. The entire situation was completely unnecessary. You're not asking the Jets to step aside and allow the Cardinals to score, but some common sense would be nice.

I just thought it was interesting what Mike Holmgren had to say to Sando. He said he's learned that it's OK to shut things down in the interest of protecting your players. It's a lesson that hopefully Jim Zorn learned from Holmgren, and I feel pretty certain that Tom Coughlin, Wade Phillips and Andy Reid would use their heads in that situation, too.

Football is inherently violent, but there's a fine line between aggressiveness and flat out stupidity. In my mind, both coaches crossed that line Sunday. You just hope other coaches around the league were paying attention.
A game is 60 minutes. Not 59. Why hasn't the media questioned the tactics of losing teams scoring late cheap touchdowns for dozens of games each season? They only now second guess because there was an injury. What about the 100s of blowout games that ended without incident? Teams should change the way the game is played because of one injury? Why not change the rules to touch football so there's never any injuries.
