    Detailed Analysis

Despite a winning record after three games, the New York Football Giants are still looking for a consistent effort. The Giants will need a big performance from their defense as they face the hard-nosed running of Ricky Williams and the rest of the Miami Dolphins at Giants Stadium. New York's defense is ranked last in the NFL after three weeks, and the offense has been uneven from one half to another. "We've haven't played a complete game yet," said Giants wide-out Amani Toomer." Pro Bowl defensive end Michael Strahan, who missed most of training camp with a broken toe, might be the best example of what's wrong with the defense. Against the Rams, he had four tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. However, Strahan hasn't made any game changing plays in the past two games. Strahan and company have played better against the run than the pass. The Giants are giving up a little more than 90 yards per game on the ground, but their defense has been shredded for a league-high 314 yards per game in the air.

New York's main concern this week will be stopping Williams. The All-Pro tailback carried the ball a career-high and team-record 42 times to lift Miami to a 17-7 victory against Buffalo on Sept. 21. Williams has rushed for 100 yards in 12 of his 19 games with Miami. The Dolphins are 10-2 in those contests. "He's dominating," Miami linebacker Jamie Nails said. "That's what Ricky does. He dominates you with his will." Miami's defense has struggled to match preseason expectations. Injuries to Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain have slowed the secondary and the pass rush has not been as formidable as in years past. Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor has struggled this year after recording 19 sacks, seven forced fumbles and 70 tackles in 2002. Taylor has only one sack and three tackles after three games. Miami is counting on Taylor to pick up his game to help disrupt New York's prolific passing attack.

Giants quarterback Kerry Collins has thrown for 743 yards and 6 touchdowns. Receivers Ike Hilliard and Toomer are among the conference leaders in receptions. Hilliard has a team-high three touchdowns and Toomer leads New York with 305 receiving yards. Tiki Barber's strong start has given the Giants some much-needed confidence in their ground game. The only disappointment has been Jeremy Shockey. The tight end, who went to the Pro Bowl last season, has dropped several passes and has only 10 catches for 109 yards. Shockey dropped a sure touchdown pass but caught another in New York's 24-21 overtime victory against the Washington Redskins on Sept. 21. The Giants have shown flashes of the explosiveness that helped them win seven of nine games to get to the playoffs last season, but they still haven't put it all together. The offensive line seems to have settled down now that Chris Bober has moved from center to right tackle and rookie Wayne Lucier has taken over the snapping. Despite three fumbles in three games, Tiki Barber is fourth in the NFC with 313 yards rushing.

The Giants and Dolphins are both coming off a bye week. They have not met at Giants Stadium since 1990.

    DOLPHINS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense -- 146.3 yards per game (6th in NFL); Passing Offense -- 183.7 ypg (26th); Total Offense -- 330.0 ypg (13th). Rushing Defense -- 63.0 ypg (2nd); Passing Defense -- 236.3 ypg (27th); Total Defense -- 299.3 ypg (11th).

    GIANTS TEAM RANK: Rushing Offense -- 110.3 yards per game (14th); Passing Offense -- 237.7 ypg (4th); Total Offense -- 348.0 ypg (6th). Rushing Defense -- 90.3 ypg (T-9th); Passing Defense -- 314.3 ypg (32nd); Total Defense -- 404.6 ypg (32nd).

LAST MEETING: Dec. 8, 1996; Giants, 17-7. At Miami, Dave Brown completed 21 of 28 passes for 169 yards and a TD. New York held the Dolphins scoreless for the final three quarters.

STREAKS AND NOTES: Dolphins -- Miami is 9-5 following bye weeks. ... The Dolphins have six TDs in seven trips inside the red zone. ... Miami's defense has not allowed a rushing TD this season. Giants -- RB Barber has 361 receptions and needs one to pass RB Frank Gifford for third in franchise history. ... WR Toomer has three consecutive 100-yard receiving games. ... DE Strahan is 3½ sacks shy of 100 for his career.

As mentioned, Miami is off a bye week and riding a 2-0 SU/ATS run off wins over AFC East rivals Jets (21-10) and Bills (17-7). Ricky Williams leads the offense that averages 146 yards rushing per game, and (as usual) Miami's run defense is sensational: 63 yds allowed per game, though the pass ‘D’ is allowing 236 yds per game. The defense gave up 265 passing yards to David Carr in the opener and 373 yards to Jets QB Vinny Testaverde. The NY Giants (2-1 SU, 2-1 ATS) have gone two straight over, though NY won't be able to run here, so Kerry Collins will have to get it done through the air...which is not likely but plausable. The Giants defense in the last game allowed the Redskins to rush for 5.6 yards per carry and young QB Patrick Ramsey to throw for 348 yards, so Miami and Williams will be licking their chops. Giants are 3-0 ATS in its last three meetings with Miami, but in a clash like this, better to lean toward the team with the better defense and ground attack, and that is not the Football Giants. Fish win!

Projected Score: NY Giants 14, MIA Dolphins 21
