11-15-1 here after last night's split.

    Cincinnati Reds vs Philadelphia Phillies

A Look At The Cincinnati Reds

The Cincinnati Reds had a brief three game win streak going last week, but since then they have gone just 1-4 in their last five. The Red lost game one of this series by a score of 3-2 and are now just 2-11 on the road. This is not shaping as a good year for the Reds and the reason is their pitching that comes in ranked 29th in the league in ERA at 5.13, while also ranking and 29th in WHIP at 1.49. On the road Cincinnati starters have an ERA of 5.20, while their pen has an ERA of 6.50. Just not good numbers all the way around and the Reds don’t have the kind of offense that can overcome pitching like that. The Reds are currently in last place in the NL Central and that is probably where they will end up at season’s end.

Getting the call for the Reds in this one will be Dan Straily, who has gone 1-1 with a 3.47 ERA in eight games (five starts) this year. As a starter he has gone 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA this year. Straily is 6-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 20 career day games (16 day starts). This will be his 1st career starts vs the Phillies. On offense Cincinnati comes in ranked 21st in the league in scoring, putting up 4.03 rpg, while also ranking 25th in hitting at .233 and 15th in homers with 37. Pacing the offense so far has been Jay Bruce, who has six homers and 23 RBIs which leads the team, but he is hitting just .237 so far. Zack Cosart is off to a nice start as he is hitting .317 with 10 doubles, four homers and 13 RBIs so far.

A Look At The Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies are the surprise of the baseball world right now as they are currently six games over .500 and just 1.5 games out of first in what has become a very tough National League East. Can they stay in the race all year? It is highly unlikely that they can stay in the NL East race, but they just may have what it takes to stay in the race for a wildcard slot. They really need a bit more offense though to compliment the pitching they have been getting. On offense the Phillies check in at 29th in the league in scoring, putting up 3.28 rpg, while also ranking 28th in hitting at .228 and 29th in homers with 29. Leading the Phils offense has been Odubel Herrera, who leads the team in hitting at .331, while also hitting three homers, drawing 27 walks and scoring 22 runs. Ryan Howard leads the team in homers with eight, but he is also hitting just .176 on the year so far.

On the mound the pitching has been solid as they come in ranked 11th in the league in ERA at 3.76 while also ranking and 4th in WHIP at 1.17. At home Philadelphia starters have an ERA of 3.35, while their pen has an ERA of 3.02. Adam Morgan gets the call for the Phillies and he has gone 1-0 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts this year. Last year he was 5-7 with a 4.48 ERA in 15 starts, while in his career at the Bank he is now 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA in 9 starts. Morgan is 1-1 with a 4.80 ERA in three career day starts and this will be his first ever meeting with the Reds.

Game one of this series was low scoring an I expect the same in this one. The Phillies are not a good offensive team and Dan Straily is not a bad pitcher. He has never faced the Phils and that gives him an edge here, so he should have a good game. Adam Morgan does not have great numbers in this park, but he is pitching well overall so far and the Reds are not a great offensive team either. This one may see five runs at most, just like game one of this series did.

    Miami Marlins vs Washington Nationals

Even with Fernandez on the mound I can’t go with the Fish here. Fernandez is a much weaker starter on the road than at home and I see him struggling here. He has great lifetime numbers vs the Nats, but six of his seven starts vs them came at home. I say the Nats get to him here. They are a solid home team and Joe Ross has pitched well in his brief career vs the Fish. Take the Nats in this one.

San Diego Padres vs Milwaukee Brewers

I will go with the Brewers here. Neither team is playing all that well right now, but the Brewers are at home and the Padres are not a good road team. Zach Davies has yet to win a home game for the Brewers, but I say that he gets his 1st one here and has a good all-around showing vs a bad San Diego offense that scored just one run in the first two games of the series. Take the Brewers in this one.
