HOLLYWOOD PARK -- Race #6 -- CHANEL ISLANDS (#14)

The 6th race is a maiden claiming $40,000 sprint for California-bred fillies at 6 furlongs. Par is 95. CHANEL ISLANDS made her debut on May 1st under these exact conditions and earned a nice 91-95 while grabbing 3rd in a strong race. Important things to note are that the winning pace and speed figures were 95-98 and any time a horse (especially a horse making their 1st start) can gain ground and run a higher final figure than pace figure in a race where the final figure was also higher than the final figure, you've got a horse who ran a great race and should be able to improve even more. After the nice sprint race CHANEL ISLANDS was moved to turf, stretched out in distance to 1-1/16 and jumped up in class to face Cal-bred maiden allowance fillies. All of those changes actually led to an improved figure from CHANEL ISLANDS and she earned a 99-102-93+ under those conditions. Her pace figures were very solid and the final figure of 93+ at the route distance is faster than any sprint figure from any other contestant in this race. The 93+ at the route combined with the 95 at the sprint mean she is a standout spot play to end the Hollywood meet.
CHANEL ISLANDS did run one more time on July 1st against maiden allowance turf horses. That effort was a 102-98-83+ and can easily be tossed out. Trainer Craig Dollase clicks at nearly 44% wins with his turf to dirt horses and jockey Mick Ruis jumps back on and he was the one who rode here in the good dirt sprint debut effort. All systems are "go" and it seems safe to predict a super effort today.
Finding the horses who will fill the rest of the minor awards is a more difficult task. I liked the 85-91 that OUTTA THE HOUSE earned in her only start and she's capable of improvement. NAUVOO has high early speed and drew the rail which will force her to show it. She has faded in both starts but has been rested a bit and may hold on better today. Finally there are 2 first time starters who should be sprinkled in for some spice. REKHA and YOURWAY HIGHWAY may run better than the 20-1 and 15-1 morning line. CHANEL ISLANDS is the standout spot play win bet in here and I will use her on top of each of the contenders mentioned, giving slightly more attention to OUTTA THE HOUSE and NAUVOO.
Good luck...
