HOLLYWOOD PARK -- Race #3 -- FOUR CHECKER (#4)
__________________________________________________ __________________
Today's 3rd race is a $20,000 claiming sprint for four year olds and upward This seven furlong event has a par level of 103. There are many different stories to be told in this race. Not every story has a happy ending. We have a few horses dropping to an all time low claiming price that have not won a race in over a year. On the positive side, we also have a couple runners getting a confident bump UP in claiming price which tells us those horses are doing very well.
I don't believe there's another horse in this race feeling as good as FOUR CHECKER (9-2) right now. This five year old now resides in the Jack Carava barn and comes off his sharpest effort in quite some time. FOUR CHECKER spent too much of his career in a very low profile barn, but managed to earn enough checks to keep his connections interested. Once trainer Phil Oviedo finally dropped FOUR CHECKER to the $10,000 level, the horse woke up with a win and figures of 87-99. A new trainer (Nick Canani) was there with the claim slip for $10,000 that day. Canani got a nice return on his investment in the very next start. FOUR CHECKER earned his best recent figures of 93-103 while just missing by a nose versus $16,000 company. Trainer Jack Carava claimed the sharp FOUR CHECKER from that April 8th start at Santa Anita and jumps his new claim to today's $20,000 level. Since FOUR CHECKER has already earned a par final figure, let's take him right back while he's so sharp.
I prefer to bet horses coming out of good races while earning a competitive finish for their effort. BETTOR ROYALTY (4-1) is cheap but honest. He comes out of the same race as FOUR CHECKER which was a strong $16,000 claimer. I think those two should make up two thirds of the trifecta once again. I will toss in JEFE DE JEFES (12-1), since he is also coming off a sharp effort. Good luck!
