    At the Gate - Friday

    October 22, 2015

We are now just a week away from the Breeders’ Cup, with Friday’s marquee race the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) and it looks as if there will be a full field.

There were 16 pre-entered for the Distaff including Beholder, who would be the favorite except she is going to take on the boys in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

With her absence is makes for a dynamite wagering race, with Wedding Toast the current 2-1 early wagering choice at Sportsbook.ag. Trained by Kiaran McLaughlin, she comes in the Distaff riding a three race winning streak, taking the Grade 2 Ruffian followed by a pair of Grade 1 races, the Ogden Phipps and the Beldame Invitational in her most recent outing.

Sheer Drama is the second choice in early Distaff wagering at Sportsbook.ag at 3-1. She won a pair of Grade 1 races in her last two starts, taking the Delaware Handicap and Personal Ensign.

I’m a Chatterbox is the third choice at 5-1 and will be taking on older for the first time. She finally got her first Grade 1 victory in the Cotillion at Parx in her last start. She was second in the Alabama two back and three back crossed the wire first in the Coaching Club American Oaks but was disqualified for interference in the stretch and placed second.

Last year’s Distaff champ Untapable is all but forgotten about. She is 9-1 in early wagering for the Distaff and appears to have lost a step or two from last year where she won six of her seven starts.

This year she has won just once in six starts with four seconds. She put in an encouraging effort last out in a tough neck loss in the Spinster (G1) over the Keeneland main track.

Tom's Gift is a $52,000 purchase making his debut for the Lisa Lewis barn that is 17% winners with firsters. The colt is by first crop sire Girolamo out of the stakes winner Travelator ($647,672) who has dropped four winners. The colt debuts with lasix and has decent works on the morning tab.

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

    BEL Race 7 Alw $62,000N1X (4:13 ET)
    #2 Saint Joseph 6-1
    #1 David Rocks 4-1
    #3 Jai Alai 8-1
    #4 Black Tide 9-2

Analysis: Saint Joseph is making his first start since last December where he faded to finish sixth in the state bred Damon Runyon in his first start against winners. He broke his maiden two back going seven furlongs on the main track at the Big A. He comes back a gelding and with a couple of bullet works on the morning tab for the Englehart barn that is 30% winners (with a +ROI) with runners coming back off a +180 day layoff.

David Rocks prompted the early ape, was fanned out wide and weakened late to finish third last out. Two back he had the lead heading for home but did not have enough gas left late, weakening to finish third, beaten a length. He draws the rail, picks up Johnny V and owns solid early and mid pace numbers.
