  • Saints Coach Sean Payton Speaks Regarding Gun Laws

Less than 48 hours after former Saints defensive and Will Smith was gunned down in the streets of New Orleans, Saints coach Sean Payton spoke passionately about gun laws that have been a divisive political issue for years.

“Two hundred years from now, they're going to look back and say, ‘What was that madness about?' “ Payton told USAToday.com's Jarrett Bell in a phone interview. “The idea that we need them to fend off intruders … people are more apt to draw them (in other situations). That's some silly stuff we're hanging onto."

Payton's comments come after Smith was shot and killed following a traffic incident. Cardell Hayes, 28, has been charged with second-degree murder.

Payton says he was unable to sleep after hearing the news and drove to the scene of the crime early Sunday morning. He then went to the hospital to spend time with Smith's wife, who was shot twice in the leg, and some of Smith's relatives. By Sunday night, he was scouring the internet looking for more information on what exactly happened.
