Spurned by Zack Greinke hours before, the San Francisco Giants on Saturday reached an agreement with free-agent right-hander Jeff Samardzija on a five-year, $90-million contract
The deal is pending a physical.
The offseason market has been favorable to starting pitchers. Samardzija, who will be 31 next month, will average $18 million a season in spite of a statistically poor 2015 in which his ERA was nearly 5. He is, however, a noted workhorse, and the Giants are reworking a rotation that thins after ace Madison Bumgarner.
Over about a week, noted free agents Jordan Zimmermann (Detroit Tigers), David Price (Boston Red Sox) and Zack Greinke (Arizona Diamondbacks) were signed, Price and Greinke for more than $200 million each. John Lackey, who agreed to a two-year, $32-million contract with the Chicago Cubs, also came off the board, leaving the Giants to spend on the likes of Samardzija, Johnny Cueto, Mike Leake, Scott Kazmir or Yovani Gallardo, and, indeed, they could sign another starter in the coming weeks.
In Samardzija, they’ll have to count on a bounce-back season. He was far better in 2014, when he pitched for the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A’s, though he has never had a winning season. His career record is 47-61, his career ERA 4.09, and he’s coming off a season in which he led the American League in home runs, hits and runs allowed. His strikeouts were down. His walks were up.
